To the OP, be more specific.

Specifically, we're talking around the YBM Yeongdonpo. That's as much knowledge I know as of now. Sorry.

Youngdeungpo Gu is huge big, the biggest Gu in Seoul and probably more than 10 Dongs are in Youngdeungpo Gu.
Seoul National University, National Assembly, YeuEdo ( financial center of Korea )...etc are located in Youngdeungpo Gu.
Also just cross Han bridge, there is Itawan, U.S Army base...etc
I can't say Youngdeungpo is more danger than another area of Seoul.

Maybe.

Wrong, there are 6.

Wrong. SNU is in Kwanak-gu.

The National Assembly and Yeouido are in Yeondeungpo-gu, but Yeouido is actually separated from the rest of the Gu by an arm of the Han River.

Wrong, the Hangangdaegyo ends in Dongjak -gu.

Well, it's got the biggest remaining redlight area now that Cheongnyangni is shutdown.

I have lived in Yeongdeongpo (Dangsan-dong) for a little over 2 years now. I live in an offictel and for me, the Dangsan area is great. Three major supermarkets within ten minutes walking distance, a lot of Korean resteraunts around, the Han River Park just a ten minute walk / 5 minute bike ride away from my front door. I really like living there.

In my opinion the area (Dangsan) is extremely safe. That said, my girlfriend lives just down the road in a first floor villa, which has been broken into three times over the past year. They stole jewelry twice and underwear once.

Yeongdengpo market (where I think a YBM branch is located) is about a 20 minute walk from where I live and it does seem a lot more unrefined. There are three or four big department stores in the area, but on the street there are a lot of venters and poorer looking older folk, most of whom speak Korean with one of the Southern dialects.

I always feel safe in that area also, but several of my coworkers (Korean) have told me that the area is unsafe (make of this what you will). Personally, I have not seen the red-light district. In fact, I didnt know there was one in the area. But it wouldnt surprise me.

Plusses (for Dangsan):
Wallking distance to Han River Park. (bike riding track, countryish feel, almost deserted on weekdays, great place for dates, etc)

A lot of good supermarkets in the area.

Family vibe. Not a central drinking area. There are bars around, but nothing like Sincheon or even Jongno.

There is Youngdeungpo-dong also. It is incidentally where the Korean alliance

I live near there. There is some very convenient shopping (market and many department stores) and bus and subway access is great. It is near to downtown.

Yeongdeungpo Park is not bad as far as Seoul goes but it is a major attraction for Seoul's homeless people. You will see them there 24/7. It is not too surprising to see some religious people prop up soup kitchens for them.

In addition, it is the stop before Seoul Station on the Korean National Railroad which again offers very convenient transportation but it is also a destination for country folk come to the big city. There are many motels and yogwans here and many gambling places to entice the country folk. It is a hot place for the type of activities that go with gambling and many hotel rooms.

You will also find 3-D worker run shops and various factory people in this area. By Korean standards, homeless people, gambling, prostitution and general hooking-up area, 3-D workers all spell not so desirable location. By Western standards, it is very safe.

Come for the shopping and the transportation.

This makes sense. I wondered why there were so many southerners in that area.

Like this poster says, the Yeongdongpo Station area "seems" a little rougher than other areas of Seoul, but as a foreigner, it is probably safer than Apkujeong or Jeongno where you are liable to run into large groups of drunken uni students.

i live in yeongdeungpo, near to 영등포역 and right in the thick of all that is yeongdeungpo-dong. if you're a guy, you'll have no problem whatsoever. in fact most of the locals are friendly to me, friendlier than they ever were when i lived in supposedly 'good' areas like apgujong. apartment rent is low, there's a lot to do (shopping, drinking, etc.) and transport is great. a lot of people judge the place because it has a lot of homeless or poor people, but i see people like that here every day and they never caused me any harm.
i wouldn't make the same recommendation for a girl though. yeongdeungpo is notorious for prostitution and of course that brings with it groups of drunken, low-quality, horny men. the behaviour of individuals in yeongdeungpo is generally less civilised than anywhere else i've seen in korea, and is still the only place in this country where anyone tried to start a fight with me. once i saw a man pushing a woman around in the street, in broad daylight, too. for those who know what 양아치 means, yeongdeungpo is famous for them.
basically yeongdeungpo is crowded, noisy, and full of earthy, human melee. if i were a photographer, i think i could get a lot of art out of the place.
so... it has its charm, and for a foreign guy, its not a decent enough place to live. i wouldn't recommend girls to live there though.

as was stated, the gu covers too much territory to generalize about. The dong however ..

As already mentioned, it's a big gu... but from what i've heard a lot of gangsters are there. Yeouido is course nice, but good luck finding a place for cheap there.

I however would say it's not as bad as some people made it out to be.

YDP is fine. There is a Costco nearby to pick up all of your foreign goodies and the prices in this area are not inflated like in East Seoul. You have a straight shot to Hongdei, while being relatively close to Itaewon.

You cost of living will be much less than the more popular areas and i really doubt you'll get mugged or attacked. Koreans are afraid of white people so all you need to do is give them the evil eyeball and watch them cower back in terror.
