I went to Costco the other day and saw that rice was around 40,000 a sack, on average. If you do, what do you pay for it? Just curious in regards to the current increase in prices and shortages of rice and wheat worldwide. |

I bought 4 kg of brown rice for man won last week from my local dry grain shop. I live in the land of rice though, Icheon is famous for it, so prices might just be cheaper here. |

The price of rice is strictly controlled by the government and kept artificially high to help those poor, poor Korean farmers. |

I don't pay for rice. My wife's uncle is a farmer and he pretty much takes care of all of our rice/barley needs. |

don't sweat the small stuff
and the fact is that the cost of rice as a percentage of our income as a daily or weekly or even monthly expense is so minor that it's not worth worrying about
yet indeed there are plenty of POOR people - truly poor not first world definitions of not keeping up with the jones - who are feeling the impact of rising rice prices
seriously, put things in context |

I eat rice 4 times a week at school, I don't eat at the cafeteria on Wednesdays.
I usually go out twice a week at night for dinner.
I don't buy rice at home.
Eating rice everyday is crazy.

Rice is just dull, dull, dull and boring. I eat it in restaurants but in 3 years in Seoul I've never bought rice to cook at home. There are much tastier options. |

Once or twice a day, but never for breakfast yet.
I think we paid 24 for 10kg of organic last time. Baby gets sound ground rice porridge with chicken or beef. |

I hope now they control it the other way, as world grain prices are skyrocketing. |

When we first got back to Korea rice seemed quite expensive, but only because we were just coming from Chile where it was about half the price of what it is here. But the bottom line is that for 10,000W you can get a bag of rice that lasts for a month for 2 people, so even though it's more expensive it is irrelevant. If you're totally stressed about the cost of rice just consider that a month's rent costs less than a bag of rice. |

Very true, price of rice is much cheaper in U.S than in Korea. |

The overprocessed white rice they serve here has almost no nutritional value whatsoever, none. It's basically pure carbohydrates (sugar).
It sure is expensive though. |

Haven't bought rice yet but plan to buy some soon. The trick is to add other grains in the rice like barley, wheat, sweet (sticky rice), and others. If you go to shijang, the little old women on the floor sells the mixed version for cheap price. Add a little bit of that into your rice to add texture and flavor. There are different grades of rice so what you pay will depend on that. Ask the local people for a good grade if you want quality. Thai rice or what you would get with Chinese food back home is not quality so it'll be cheaper. The rice used to make sushi is higher grade. Can't tell the difference in rice, then just go for the average. Might want to buy a small bag and try it once to see if you like it and then buy in larger quantity once you like it. |
