Everyone says that the money in Korea is so much better than elsewhere.
Has anyone taught in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Cambodia... etc?
I'm thinking about taking a 6 months hiatus from Korea, and taking my future husband to another country. Since he wouldn't be able to work there, I'm just curious... would I be able to support two people off of my income? Would we need to save up money to support him before leaving?
Just curious. |

I taught in Thailand for a year. You wont make any money there unless you are a certified teacher with at least two years of teaching experience.
China is worse paying with the teachers getting an average of $600.00 US monthly. However I have heard that there are some Korean schools in China for Korean expats and their kids that pay comparative wages to Korea.
Vietnam - you can make close to what you can in Korea but you must work two jobs and without a CELTA you'll be scraping bottom. Also it's much tougher to live there.
Taiwan - Not quite Korea pay but way better than Thailand or China. I've heard that there's not a lot of support in the form of resources for westerners there.
Japan - comparative pay to Korea but cost of living even greater than the US. Most people I knew who worked there ended up leaving with pretty much what they came with. |

What is this, 2003? Things change, buddy - China is paying a lot more now. Factor in the low cost of living, the friendly people, culture, food, the diversity of the country and it works out to be a much smarter choice than Korea. |

I taught in the United Arab Emirates through ELS. Sometimes refered to Sisa Young a sa in Korea. It was appoximately the same money as Korea with better housing and more vacation time. I spent all of Ramadan in Goa India. Hampi was a really trippy place.
Teaching in any Arab Gulf state is much harder than Korea. The boys are bratty. Their trained to hate Kaffirs. You can't do anything to discipline them. Korea's a real cake walk compaired to the UAE.
They make the Koreans look well organised.
The residents visa thing was a real bitch too. |
