Bright Eyes by I don't know who.
Not for the song itself so much as that scene from Watership Down. It always literally brings a tear to my eye whenever I hear it. |

"Everybody Hurts" by REM might be cliche, but my God, that is a depressing song. |

That's a sad one alright but he also can do such a great job with lively stuff -- I think "She's my Everything" is an awesome tune.
I just did "The River" by Springsteen in class. I wanted to slit my own throat at the end or at least find myself a dry river......

I tried listening to the John Prine song on Youtube, but the rhythm and sing-song melody didn't convey much sense of sadness - though the lyrics may be sad (actually I couldn't get through it ...)
This cover of it is pretty sad ...

"She's Leaving Home" by the Beatles was a sad tune.
"Eleanor Rigby" had a sad message, but had a snappy beat (except for the refrain...)
Of course, "Tears in Heaven" reflects Eric Clapton's real-life grief and is a classic.
Here's a cover of the tune just on piano:

This one's not a sad tune, but the message of imminent mass destruction (heightened by updated images) is pretty sad:

Hold On
Quote: |
They hung a sign up in out town
"if you live it up, you won't live it down"
So, she left Monte Rio, son Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With charcoal eyes and Monroe hips She went and took that California trip
Well, the moon was gold, her Hair like wind, She said don't look back just Come on Jim
Oh you got to Hold on, Hold on, You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, You gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch and a ring made from a spoon
Everyone is looking for someone to blame But you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops, You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said baby, I still love you, Sometimes there's nothin left to do
Oh you got to Hold on, hold on, You got to hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you got to Just hold on.
Down by the Riverside motel, It's 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store she closed her eyes And started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way When it's cold and there's no music
Well your old hometown is so far away But, inside your head there's a record That's playing, a song called Hold on, hold on You really got to hold on Take my hand, I'm standing right here And just hold on. |

"There were seven Spanish Angels" by Willie Nelson.
"She reached down & picked the gun up, that lay smoking in his hand.
She said 'father please forgive me, I can't make it without my man'.
And she knew the gun was empty, and she knew she couln't win,
but her final prayer was answered whenthe rifles fired again..."
Now thats a tragic song. |

Louise by Leo Kottke. (I don't know if he wrote it, but it's the only version I know.) It's about a prostitute that commits suicide; the lyrics alone don't do justice to Kottke's delivery, though:
They said that Louise was not half-bad
It was written on the walls and window shades
And though she'd act the little girl
A deceiver, don't believe her, that's her trade
Sometimes a bottle of perfume,
Flowers and maybe some lace
Men brought Louise 10-cent trinkets
Their intentions were easily traced
And everybody knew at times she cried
Ah but women like Louise they get by
And everybody thought it kind of sad
When they found Louise in her room
They'd always put her down below their kind
Still some cried when she died this afternoon
Louise rode home on the mail train
Somewhere to the South I heard them say
Too bad it ended so ugly
Too bad she had to go this way
And the wind is blowin' cold tonight
So goodnight, Louise, goodnight. |
