Youtube video
People are idiots sometimes.
Sfgate article
Quote: |
A student faces disciplinary action after two people threw green whipped cream pies at New York Times columnist and author Thomas L. Friedman as he began an Earth Day speech at Brown University.
A video of the Tuesday incident posted on YouTube.com shows Friedman telling the audience, "It's great to be back here at Brown," shortly before Margaree Little, a senior English literature major, and an unidentified man storm the stage. |

Anyone pondering this sort of action should consider that if the victim were to have a fatal allergic reaction to something in the pie, you could be facing some pretty serious legal difficulties |

On the other hand, the recipients of the pie flinging could be better sports about it. Those pies are the equivalent of paparazzi flashbulbs for public figures that actually accomplish something. |

I have an automatic response of contempt for people who do things like this. In my opinion, the right of protest stops short of physically attacking a person. |

Well, the pie-throwers are idiots (they wanted to "open a dialogue"? Really?) but Friedman's well-deserving of a cream pie to the kisser. |

Why?
His works on global economics are fantastic. |

Frankly, someone throwing a pie should be charged with assault. I think it's a form of assault. |

It is assault. If someone comes at you with a pie, and you are armed, you should be able to shoot them as far as Im concerned. ( if you could act fast enough.) |

You'll be gratified to know that it is an assault (provided the victim sees it coming). And if it hits, its a battery. |

Ever the law student. I love those law-school hypotheticals. "If a woman picks up a frozen swordfish and attacks her husband with it, does it qualify as assault with a deadly weapon?" |

There are ways to protest. I personally like Tom Friedman and many, but not all, of his views. He is a moderate and tries to see things from different angles and has matured a lot in his political thinking, and has integrity and courage. The protestor, if he gets prosecuted, that is his fault. You shouldn't treat people like that. |

By the way, "Don't taze me bro!" comes to mind. Where were the campus police? |

Didn't Stephane Dion get pied? He should get more of that, and Johnathan Cretin. |

Yes, while no fan of Friedman, I thought the attack was appalling. I cringed watching it. Not, only that, it's likely to backfire, as people will tend to sympathise with the victim.
Poor show. |
