I am a member of 2 professional forums. eslcafe, for pro teachers, and jetcareers, for pro pilots. I'm not a pro-pilot per se, but I have the private license and the Multi Engine/Instrument license, but never got the Commercial License because, well, for the cost of the Commercial License you may as well buy your own 747.
But I digress, I have noticed several marked contrasts in the 2 forums.
1) jetcareers: Members talk about the places around the world they have flown into and the local sights and sounds with a mature approach.
eslcafe: Members talk about the places around the world they have thrown up in and the local women they did and how much the weed was.
2) jetcareers: Members tell newbies about the routes they took through the industry to become successful and the difficult road from beginning to end.
eslcafe: Members believe any success they have had in South Korea is because of their natural rights.
3) jetcareers: salary is never discussed.
eslcafe: From reading these forums, I know how much 60% of the people on this board make and how much they have stashed away.
4) jetcareers: Members believe they always have to improve their professionalism to reach the highest standards.
eslcafe: Individual members believe they are the standard.
5) jetcareers: Members are not afraid to relocate to the most foresaken corners of the world if it means continuing to fly planes.
eslcafe: Members will only stay where girls like them.
6) jetcareers: A member loses their job because of the economy and is forced back to loading baggage under the plane instead of flying it, but doesn't care because they are still around the industry.
eslcafe: Uni teachers worst fears are losing their jobs and going back to Hagwons.
7) jetcareers: Members treat each other with respect and encourage each others goals.
eslcafe: Members don't believe any more teachers should enter Korea because it will drive down their salary.
The reason why there are no oo's and aah's around ESL instructors is because we act and talk like morons. If we dignify ourselves a little bit then maybe one day we can be looked upon, finally, with all the respect we deserve. There has been more than enough blood, sweat, and tears poured into this industry from hard working ESL instructors (95% of us fit that description), so we should try to act the part.
First, don't talk about how much you make because it makes you look cheap, like a hip hop guy straight out the ghetto with bling. Has your doctor or professor openly discussed their salary with you? I doubt it.
Secondly, try to handle stares on the bus and subway with a little more tact. Remember, it's their interest in you and your language that keeps you employed in the first place.
Thirdly, if an old ajumma on the subway is racing towards the 1 empty seat you were going to occupy, just be a gentleman and let her have it. What's it to you? Everyone in Korea, at least once, has been helped by an ajumma, whether she slipped an extra egg in your dukbokki, or gave you a box of cookies at her store for no extra charge. They are caring people underneath.
Fourthly, the old ajosshi who looks like he is pissed at you wouldn't be pissed if you tossed a smile. He'll probably buy you a bottle of soju after.
Just, be responsible and even headed and see how much better Korea treats you. |

LOL TRUE!
and I'll assume the average pilot is a lot older, wiser and mature than the average just out of college fratboy/stoner who won't get up in the morning because it's a serious drag (though I fucking hate mornings as well)
I'm not sure it's fair though to generalize about the esl crowd (or even pilots for that matter)
and as for "real jobs" - I've had some of those and I can also tell you that a lot of "real" jobs REALLY suck |

Yeah good post.
This place is a real breeding ground for negativity. It does give me some chuckles but sometimes the people on here are so OTT. There are some examples of terrible attitudes toward life in general. |

I totally agree with this part.
Perhaps you should also have "don't ask other teachers, including co-workers, how much they make". |

I'm not sure what's more depressing; that you typed up a whole post stating things that are glaringly obvious to anyone with half a brain, or the fact that you spent so much time doing it.
Congrats, you win the internet. |

I think that you're right in that what was posted should be obvious to anyone with half a brain.
The problem is that there are so many ESL/EFL teachers/instructors that just don't seem to get it. |

well as an incoming newbie, I'll have to disagree with that part. It has been enormously helpful to get an idea of the different job situations out there, including pay. I don't believe every post I read and I try to take everything I read with a grain of salt, but always sock away relevant info to the back of my mind. |

OP = Dave Sperling's sock.
OP, do you fly and teach ESL or load luggage and teach ESL? |

I am a member of several professional forums as well.
I am a pro teacher (not sure what an unproteacher would be??) but I have heard of them ). I have the degree but not a TESOL or CELTA certificate because Korea didn't require it and it costs so much if I had that kind of money I wouldn't have come here in the first place
My current salary is pathetic so I don't discuss it but am more than happy to discuss various ranges of salaries and what people SHOULD be making whenever someone asks - why? because it's how we manage our lives, virtually everywhere!!
and don't kid yourselves - doctors and lawyers discuss their salaries with each other all the time - just because they don't tell me, so what? I'm not one of their peers.
Salary info is pertinent to one's occupation and if one has half a brain one does investigate salary as part of the aspects of the position one is seeking.
Do you think we do this for the FUN of it??? |

I agree in spirit with the part about the older Korean men and women, although I've slipped a few times and shown my anger at them, especially the pushy older women. However, I still find the ajummas, not the halmonies, to be infinitely worse in terms of manners. |

I don't know. I think you said a whole lot of misleading statements based upon your own subjective sense of the profession.
1. First of all, I don't believe for a momment that airline pilots don't talk about drink and women. Airline pilots are famous for boozing and womanizing. Regardless, it is your own subjective value that boozing and womanizing are immature or wrong.
2. Many people on this site do help others. ESL/EFL in Korea actually has few veterans. Most people stay a year. So, the vast majority of the people on this site are newbies. But, most people who have been around the block here do offer good advice. Ttompatz would be a good example. There are plenty of others.
3. Whilel I agree, talking specifics about salary is rude, general discussions are valuable in terms of understanding what is fair and to standardize income as the free for all free market of Korean education creates many hazzards and inequities. So, people on this forum are acting according to market imperatives as are those at jetcareers, is my guess.
4. There is plenty of discussion about standards, though there is some disagreement about what the standards should be. Such discussion is good for the profession as it helps all of us see things from different perspectives. One of the problems is that we can all agree that there are many different learning styles but there are also many teaching styles as well. Furthermore, most schools don't have set curriculums making a newbies job that much more difficult.
5. Plenty of people here switch jobs and countries. I'd say it is harder to find someone stable. Heck, people re-located half-way around the world just to get here. Your point here could not be farther from the truth.
6. I'm sure everybody who looses their job and has to take a position lower on the ladder is happy - yeah right?!?! Whatever dood...
7. Again, there are plenty of people who help others on this board if they can. Every year more and more people come to Korea so even if that is the ulterior motive of some, it surely isn't working.
Your next four points do have some merit. And, I'm sure those who have been around know these things as they are hardly all that difficult to understand. But, I'm sure some newbie might learn a thing or two from it if you expressed it in a more kindly and less condescending way. I would assume you are a great teacher if you teach like you argue on Dave's.
My suggestion to you is if you want to make improvements on Dave's, be positive and lead by example. Knocking others will only get you so far but you must know that.
ESL/EFL, especially in Korea, has its own pitfalls, difficulties and culture. It cannot be easily compared to other professions.
Thanks for Trolling and have a nice day! |

Point 4 made me laugh - true but funny.
Point 5 was just silly. I stay for the boys.
Generalisations are never a smart move, even if you're a pilot wannabe. |
