here's a thought.
im a white guy here and i've experienced the same sort of racism here that many talk about.
this is a foreign country - very foreign!
but it has taught me something. i spare a thought for the many people of other races who have had to endure racism IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY one hundred times worse than i have here.
how would that feel? how would it feel to be subject to people 100 times worse than koreans EVERYDAY in my OWN COUNTRY?
that would be terrible... |

Good post. My sentiments exactly.
Sadly, many people here choose to respond to this by becoming racsit towards Koreans, and making statements like,
"When I get home I'm gonna yell ANNEONG! at every Korean I see". |

good question. that's the thing. my point is the racism i have experienced here is mild, like:
* being told that i am inferior because i am white. yes, that happened a couple of times.
* being pushed aside a couple of times at the doctors and bank.
*being told to be quiet a few times because i cant speak korean and english gave them a headache.
*there are many examples like these that happen. it is all tied in with a general attitude.
but it is a feather in the wind, really.
koreans can be ignorant and racist people at times. that is for sure. but my point in this thread is to spare a thought to what people of other races have endured over many generations in their own country.
imagine growing up in my own country and dealing with racism 100 times worse in my own country.
anyway...just a thought... |

samd is an idiot, and a dangerous one at that. His posts are pathetic, even when I disagree with some of the Korean bashing, his posts are just plain stupid.
No one will go home and yell Anyeong to someone back home, nor will people be more racist, aside from possibly not buying Korean made products (I have seen people do that one due to all the trouble they have here). But that's not racist, it's punishing the country and it's laws, which is quite ok. |

This argument is stupid, but comes up enough. What happens in my country has NO BEARING on what happens here.
For example, just because my great great great great great grandfather immigrated to a country that was conquered by killing lots of natives means crap to me. I feel no need to feel guilty. I didn't do anything. If you want, change things back home. But just because your neighbour is a loud idiot, doesn't give you the right to become another loud idiot.
Racism is bad, no matter what. Just because people from the Philipines are treated like absolute crap in Kuwait, it doesn't mean that in Canada we can just ignore the less severe racism. |

| Precisely. Although I don't feel I have experienced any overt racism the discrimination I have experienced in Korea simply gives me a small insight into what some ethnic minorites have to deal with on a regular basis. |

I've actually seen people "turn racist" when they return home from being abroad. In actuality, they've always had these bad feelings, and needed an excuse to let them loose.

Course it does, if you are living in Korea and are a product of the society you grew up in then it has a very big bearing - especially if you are Canadian and make up the majority of English teachers (is it 10,000) that are teaching English to the youth of Korea.

Whats wrong with accepting responsibility for the actions of our ancestors whose murder, pillage and rape of 6/7th of the world is still being felt today? Its not ancient history you know! Can you imagine a German being so flippant as to say '40 million people got killed - hah! Not my problem!' Thankfully - most Germans have a bit more tact.

Seeing as you are not at home - You are in South Korea - hopefully your attitudes are changing for the better, you are in a place where you are not treated like a king because you are white, it would be a shame if the lessons you are learning now will be lost on you when you go home.

| Racism is more overt in NZ and more dangerous then Korea. Here you get treated well a lot but kind of excluded as well. But in NZ Asians will be insulted directly and assaulted by racist idiots. Its annoying getting the 'his' and 'how are yous' but I'd rather have that than the 'f**kin g**ks, go back to your own country' that Asian students get in NZ. I tutored Korean kids in NZ and many of them had stories like that. Several of them got physically assaulted for no reason. When I'm having a bad time and getting annoyed by the ones who are too pushy with their conversation practice I remember my former students stories and it helps me keep it in perspective. |

| If you don't like having people yell "HELLO" at you, just respond with "KONNICHIWA" and they probably won't do it again. |
