I was told that one cannot get proof of a criminal background check unless one HAS a criminal record on file. I heard you can get it thru your local authorities, but does this include COMPANIES that service background checks? I hear that getting it thru the company will cost me 50-100 dollars (california).... or can I get it another way through the local police? help!!! |

Simply not true.

Be very careful. Korean Immigration will accept a background check performed by federal, state, or local authorities. They will NOT accept a background check performed by a private company.
That being said, there are companies that will obtain your background check from the government and get it apostilled for you. These companies generally charge several hundred dollars, however.
The State of California requires fingerprint submission to obtain a background check/clearance letter for visa purposes; see http://ag.ca.gov/fingerprints/forms/visa_immigration_clearance.pdf for information and instructions. As Korea does not require a fingerprint search, if you have a relative or friend who can get a local check for you, that would probably be easier. |
