One thing that has always annoyed me is that they almost never say the full names of Koreans who get arrested or convicted of crimes, but they usually do for foreign criminals. I'm pleased to see that they're consistent in this case and have listed no full names, foreign and Korean. |

I don't understand why anyone would do it here, if anyone suspects you and reports it the police are onto you and you are screwed.
It's not like in other countries where most people don't mind as long as you don't bother them.
There's so much more chance of getting dobbed into the coppers and then your done for. If you can't get by without a smoke then why are you teaching in Korea? |

I can't speak for everyone, Bish, but I suspect the majority of those people are here for the kimchi. |

Ilsan is one of the wealthier suburbs of Seoul and attracts teachers from areas that were also middle to upper class; the arrogant, holier than thou, not wanting to mix with the locals, just here to say they were here rather than actually know the land and the culture except on their terms only. they certainly don't want to mix with those who live in Seoul, but would rather come here and party on the weekends, leaving the urban life in general to others as they simply cannot tolerate it.
they stick together and make their own rules and local rules and laws be damned; no respect whatsoever even when it's for their own good (duh, losing one's visa is NOT good, getting deported also not good).
they smoke pot not worried about the possible consequences (jail time?) because they've never had to account to anyone before; chances are they could really care less even this won't shake them up, they'll be back at it again in another country soon enough.

I wish Korea would get its act together and use a standard romanization scheme. It's Kyungido, Gyeonggido, Kyeonggido, etc. It's annoying. |

And on the opposite side too, when it's something good (like a skating match or something), they give the full names of Koreans but usually only give the FIRST name of the foreigners (they could at least use the last name). |

That must be it...
By the way, the guys have been stupid but let's hope they don't get too done over.
There were some Canadians busted a few months ago, have they been sentenced yet? |

Great post. I've met many such "teachers" in Ilsan.
That's one big reason why I feel the way I do about so many other "teachers." |

Where do they get the smoke from?
I have been here a while and never had anyone sidle up to me and say "psst I know where you can get some ****".
I have stood next to someone who had that done to them, but the guy who did it seemed so untrustworthy that I would never have bought from him even in my own country.
Though the guy I was standing next too seemed interested, though he's probably one of those being arrested today.
The one fact that I learnt in Korea and never knew before I came here is that Canada is the next best place to Holland in my to do list. |

I suspect that the Korea authorities have plenty of undercover narcs who sell to morons. For example, some Canadians think they have a right to do drugs anywhere. This is NOT Canada!
If they (authorities) REALLY wanted to eject all of the druggies, there'd only be a few of us left. |

Probably true, Oh they are probably foriegners too.
I had a friend before (in my country) whose job with his mate was to go to parties, ask if anyone sold any stuff and then after being offered it, call the police.
Then after being arrested and jailed, call up the bosses on thier private number and get released while the sellers get booked and sentenced.
So just keep an eye on those asking or offering it in this country or others if you don't know them at least. |

Poor Mr M was, I suspect, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Perhaps he just looked funny. |
