From elementary and High School, it seems to be a catch phrase. Even teachers use it too much. Seems to be the first English words that spring to mind.
Rather than accepting it as an acceptable face of Korean English skills, I have now started to tell Ss that it offensive to me; as a Christian.
Funny incident in the class last Thursday evening.
One girl was saying repeatedly, so I went up to her and explained that I was a Christian and went to church, and never said that phrase.
We(I) never use the phrase 'Oh my god'.
She's not the sharpest in the box, but she seemed to understand. So to check her comprehension of my miming and pigeon Korean, I asked, "Really?".
She replied by nodding, closing her eyes, palms together in front of her face and saying, "Oh my Jesus".
I rolled my eyes and walked away laughing. |

Good luck in your campaign to fix this offensive behaviour. Could you get them to stop spitting in public while you're at it? |

Nor are christians the only to have a god. Notice the use of the word "my."
Still, I get really offended when people say, "Holy Cow!" |

Its Americas fault. They get it off American movies.
Thats serious, too.
The sheer amount of bad language in the average Hollywood movie or American TV show leads foreigners to think that level of offensive language is normal and acceptable in western society. Its really not. |

Isn't crying offense at the use of the word "God" also a demand that one be humble before their religion? That is, that they also bow?
Truth be told, I think this teacher was out of line. . .
There really was no religious connotation in the student's use. It is a common expression. The teacher made an issue where there was none but for her and her demand that people place themselves under god. |

I come from the Bible Belt in the US and have never encountered anyone who was offended by the phrase "Oh my God!" Now "Goddamn" is a horse of a different color...but it's not so common. I personally prefer "Great Scott!"
Lighten up, nobbyken! |

LOL. I especially love it when pious, self-rightous Korean God-botherers continually say it. |

Why do you assume they're talking about YOUR god?
Ya know... the way you pray to Odin is by shouting His name at the top of your lungs. |
