Hey, I'm a newbie to this forum and I was considering applying for a job at a Korean uni.

I have three years of TEFL in Taiwan and Japan, a CELTA, and a Master's (albeit not in Education or EFL). Oh, and I'm 30 years old (which may or may not be relevant). This will be my first time in Korea.

Initially, I thought a Uni. job would yield a higher salary than any other option, but in some posts, it doesn't look like the case.

So I'm wondering how a PS job measures up against a Uni. job.

Money, hours, student quality/number per class, holidays, other perks -
this kind of stuff.

Monad,

Not all uni jobs are created equal. It depends on the tier of the university. For your qualifications and experience expect the following:

Salary: 1.8-3.7 million won per month (std. hours)
(Higher end jobs don't often pay housing/ rent)

Hours: 6-15 standard hours per week

Days per week: 3-5 days on campus per week.

OT: 12-45,000won per hour

Student quality: beginner to advanced (generally well behaved)

Holidays: 2 months to 5 months paid per year

Other perks: Um... burrow DVDs for free from library?

Obviously higher tier uni jobs (which include the best of everything explained above) trump any public school position.

If you are serious about coming over here then best do some research.

PM me for more info

Thanks Kiwiana,

I haven't found much info. about university positions in my searches on the forum.

One of the few posts I found indicated that PS had the upper hand.
Which, I must admit, I found rather surprising. You've helped balance that view out somewhat.

There are a few people to whom I would like to send a PM with specific questions, but it appears I need to have made around 25 posts before I am allowed to do this. Perhaps PM's might actually be a more appropriate method of correspondence for my particular situation; I'm not sure.

I am serious about Korea!
Perhaps misguidedly, I consider this forum and Dave's ESL Cafe as research; although, not my only avenue of research.

You've given me something to work on, which is what I was looking for.
Hopefully, I can PM you soon and discuss things in greater detail.

Cheers!

Free DVD's eh? Well that's better than a slap in the face with a wet fish
(unless you're a discerning masochist).

Having worked in both, I can say that universities (at least mine) are heads and shoulders above PS jobs.

Thanks aj,

I'm considering deleting this post, but I'm not sure if that is good or bad manners.

In this situation it appears that the post isn't interesting many others;
perhaps down to a combination of a too-general approach, perhaps because the answer is obvious.

It might be in my best interests to scratch it and leave my profile unbesmirched by such buffoonery.

Trust me, you have yet to see buffoonery, it will come.
