| Demand more and say you'll find another job...They might offer you more...Typical Korean nego trick they use...Offer you the lowest hoping you'll take it. |

| Apply to SMOE. I think you will make 2.3 minimum, plus 21 business days of vacation at minimum. |

I'm sure that MA is feeling more and more like a financial millstone around your neck that you'll never get rid of.

| Yeah, the EPIK contract is weird. You don't get a pay bump until two years experience. |

Stormy: simply stating facts...I haven't worked hard to be offered 2 million. If you want to study hard and then be offered a crap wage...you go for it.
I turned them down...they have a really strange payscale, I'm just curious as what other EPIK teachers earn and what qualifications people have.
Kiwiana: I'm thinking about applying for some uni jobs....what is the teaching like? |

| SMOE seems to have the best scale out there. Kyoungnam EPIK is still offering 2.4 as it's top level salary plus 100,000 a month if you travel to other schools. |

Easy tiger, obv depends on your definition of a crap wage.
I'm with EPIK & get a lot more than that teaching the normal job plus a few after school classes a week. They pay for my (very nice) accommodation & I enjoy the work.
If you live rural & do a few extra classes (which are often within normal working hours) you have the potential to earn at least another mill a month on top of the basic EPIK pay scale wage without putting in more than an hour or 2 extra a week. |

GB,
Teaching at a good uni is a piece of cake. There are way less classroom management issues than there are with children--you can fail them if you teach credit courses. If you prep well and act professionally it's a walk in the park. PM me for more advice. |

Stormy: 2 mill is not crap for a newbie with a B.A. and no experience.
But for good teachers with qualifications it is crap. The fact that you highlighted you earn alot more than that basic, seems to show something...please say what qualifications you have/ years teaching experience? How do you earn an extra mil per month for only 1-2 hours week + rural? Sounds like you got a great deal.
I felt very disappointed with EPIK. I'm a professional when it comes to work. I take the job seriously, we do have an impact on the children/ adults we meet and teach..but feel like good teachers are not appreciated sometimes.

Saying at least a mil a month seems quite high. Unless you have an arrangement to get more than the contracted 20,000 OT rate. (Which ain't impossible I got 30,000 last year through a diff school). |

I have a Bed & 2 years teaching experience back home. The extra 1 or 2 hours comes into play as although you are expected to be at work from 8.30 to 4.30 each day, you only teach a maximum of 22 hours per week. Anything above this is considered 'extra' and you are paid extra.
My extra classes start at 3.50pm each day, I am paid extra for them though even if I wasn't teaching then I'd have to be at school anyway...
Does that make any kind of sense? It's complicated and late and I'm probably rambling.
I also live in a rural area so am paid an extra 100,000 a month for 'remote rural allowance'. I'm paid another extra 100,000 per month for 'touring pay' as I teach at another school one day a week.
When I first took this job I was asked to do 10 extra hours a week which I declined. There is definitely potential there to make lots of money.
There are however downsides to everything, and having to stick around school for hours at a time on some days can be annoying. There's only so much preparation, studying, reading and browsing of Dave's you can do and remain sane! I also get stuff-all holidays which is my biggest beef.
From what I hear though, as in all things in life, there are good deals and bad ones. Depends on the school, and to some extent your attitude.
Right...time to stop rambling. |
