So my hagwon is closing on Thursday. I will have a month off between contracts, but my E2 Visa technically doesn't end until June (12th).
I'm pretty happy about it. A month off is really appreciated (yes, the money has been worked out--I'm not broke).
Anyway, do I have to do anything with my Visa since I'm not working? Or can I just sit around twittling my thumbs for a month like I plan on doing without consequence? Thanks. |

| You'd better talk to immigration about your status. The closing hagwon may actually invalidate your visa. Let immigration know what's going on and when you intend to leave Korea(visa run or whatever) I'm sure they'll give you the 30day extension. Will you also need to resubmit new paper work to your new job? Those criminal checks can take a while. |

Is the hogwon giving the teachers their severance? Or did you guys get screwed?

From what I understand employee's don't have any right to it when the employer goes out of business. Am I wrong on this? |

I probably won't get my severance, but I'm already in the process of getting my final pay.
I've already got my CRC and finished my medical--my next job starts in June. Just have to get the Visa now.
So, I should go to immigration and let them know the situation? Do they have an English speaking phone number or something? |

It is a material change in the circumstances regarding your status of sojourn.
LEGALLY you are required to report the termination of your employment.
You should get a 30 day exit order.
Since your new job starts in June you may be able to "transfer your visa" to the new job and save you the hassle of the visa run or the exit order. It would just require you to change your status now and get an extension in a year's time.

Yes, that's true. I understand that I might not get my bonus, and actually, as contrary as it sounds to the rest of the people on here, I actually would rather have the month off with one month's pay (I am getting that). I just really need some time to reverse the burn out working at a hagwon has caused me.
Can't wait to work at a High School... |

Hah, I did get my month's paycheque and I got the bonus too, on top of being jobless for a month. This is why my boss is great.
Also, do I have to change my Visa status if my employer isn't shutting down his business? It's going to technically be open until the end of May. Just no teaching. The business licence ends on May 31st and it's not bankrupt. |

I used a very good recruiter a couple of years ago to work for EPIK. I was out of Korea and wouldn't normally consider using one. But unlike many of them in Korea, he's actually a good guy on won't try to rip you off. He's a white guy in Daejun married to a Korean and in it for the long haul. I have heard that if the business is bankrupt, the owner is not liable for certain monies, severance being one of them.

It's not going bankrupt, the owner is just closing it down *before* it goes bankrupt.
Anyway, returning to my other question, since my owner isn't technically shutting the school down until after my contract is finished (I won't be working, the students won't be here but the business will still exist) do I have to go to immigration?
I've not been officially released, just told to hang around home until the end of my contract without working... and yes, my bonus is fine. I still get it along with my next pay. |
