So I got my pay stub and my health insurance for this month was 158,000. Up almost 100,000 form the usual. I was told by the office clerk that each April, the health insurance people have to charge everyone extra to make up for some deficit. Her English isn't that well so I couldn't understand what she was talking about.

Does anyone know anything about it? Did anyone pay more for health insurance in April??? OR does anyone know who I can contact to get a definte answer??

I work at a public school btw.

Also, does anyone pay an "inhabitants tax". I was told that everyone who works in the city must pay. It's about 10,000 a month. I live in Uijeongbu so I don't know if it is only our city or what she is claiming.

I pay the "Inhabitant Tax" - it seems to be 10 % of my income tax (I live in Seoul).

Can't help you with the health insurance as I only just started. However, I didn't get any deducted for March (my first month here), so if my cover started when my contract did then I'll have to pay that back sometime.

Health Insurance = 4.48%

Your deduction should be 2.24%, your employer covers the rest.

Pension = 9%

Your deduction is 4.5%, your employer covers the rest.

10% Inhabitants Tax ---WTF!! No.

Income Tax is on a sliding scale according to your salary. The monthly withholding can be calculated at the tax service site.

Tax on 2.4 million W is about 75 000W per month. If by inhabitants tax, you mean residents tax - it is approx 10% of your tax deduction. In my example, 7 500W.

You are getting shafted. Find the numbers to all these agencies and confirm your employer is submitting your deductions. More than likely, you are funding some of their room salon evenings.

Wrong. It's 4.77%. His deduction is 2.385%

Pension = 9%

I bet this is the residents tax they're talking about as you've mentioned below.

0.145% difference. OH NO!!

Actually I do recall that health insurance contributions increased in the not so distant past, but forgot to include that as my disclaimer. I was going to - really.

And while I'm at it, I might as well do some pre-emptive defense.

I made a deal about the inhabitant tax quote being 10% and then went to explain it was 10% of the tax deduction - which was they way it was explained in the other post. Please forgive my haste that contributed to the redundancy.

Wrong... Wink

January 1 the health insurance went up to 5.08% (divided by 2 so 2.54% for each of you and your employer).

OP:

The medical thing sounds like you may have missed a couple payments when you first started working and they collected the outstanding back balance

OR you just paid for 3 months in advance

OR you just paid your bosses portion of your medical.

Without knowing when you arrived, when you got your ARC, when you were enrolled in NHIC and when you started paying into NHIC it is NOT possible to give you a definitive answer.

Yeah thats the confusing thing. I'm on my 2nd contract here so HAD I joined the NHIC late, or started paying into late etc, would it not have been "added" LAST April?

The secretary said that ALL employees had it added. It just sounds weird to me, and I know I have not missed any payments. She said it was ONLY for April.

Anyway, thanks for the phone numbers, I will call tomorrow Smile

Do you teach overtime / after school classes? If you do, that is the reason

The health is on a sliding scale. They register you as.. what your payment is.. lets say 2.0. At this time, (after taxes) it is re-evaluated (if you make more than the previously said 2.0 million) and you have to pay the extra. (because health insurance is a percentage of your salary).

Yeah mine got adjusted this month. I thought the difference must be because of that.
