There is also a version of Risk you can download in the games section of Kazaa; it's not bad but a bit graphics heavy.

Basically it seems if you can get Australia region early on.. you pretty much win the game, doesn't it?

No, in all the games I have played with my co-workers, it seems that the Australia region player comes in second. (Ask the Lemon, he knows. Very Happy )
Sure you can sometimes win, but it isn't a sure bet.

Yep. The problem with Australia is that there's no where to expand to. You can really only expand into Asia, and if the other players see that you're close to taking that, you get gang raped. Asia pays out a lot of armies, but it's basically indefensible. You're better off with N. America first, Europe second.

One method I've used quite a bit is to take S. America and use that as a take over point for N. America. You hold both this and there are still only 3 entry points. That's 7 armies a turn, which is the equivalent of Asia, without all the insecurity problems.

Holding Europe sucks too. A good part of the game is just waiting for he other players to bang it out and get weak. Then if you positioned well, and you have a trade in set coming, you can make a move. The fun part of the game is the bull talk between plays to influence the others in how they play and what they will do.

I prefer Australia. The big reason is its very well fortified. Plus anyone floating around Asia.. you can just *beep* them up too much.

I found the best way to win is to fortify Australia.. and then have a floating massive army that sits around the S.America/Africa/Europe region that totally mucks up anyone trying to secure a spot over there.

But having a well-fortified Australia with the 2+ armies each time helps you as long as your roving large armies keeps mucking it up for the others.

Good point. If you have armies outside the region, and only a good fortified postion for a base, the other armies are your real players. Yes, then I have seen this work. S. America is a good place for this play too.

I'm doing it again now.. Wink yep, Australia is key. Then just muck around with the massively huge army sitting in key spots.. and when it gets too big secure the closest continent Wink

I try to take Australis, build up the armies a bit and then do a Southern Asian blitzkrieg to take over Africa. If I can do that, then onwards to South America. If I'm too overconfident, which is usually the case, I go into Europe instead.

One can hold Australia & Asia with only three border countries. Or North America, Asia and Aussie (and Sth Am too!) with 4 border countries. I prefer to take Nth America as a priority and Aussie if possible. Pillage South America (this gets you two more Armies per turn at no extra borders to defend) You'll now have 7 armies per turn. Fortify your flank borders and sweep down through Asia and colonise Australia. Now you're set to ravage the rest of Asia and become World leader! Razz

The GMS strat for Austrialia (Giant Mindless Stack) works like a charm everytime. All it requires is patience and a bit of luck. Stockpile your armies for a few turns, let the other players slaughter each other, and then sweep through Asia for the kill.

Yep thats my strategy! Let the others slaughter each other.. if you have a monster army in Siam, you just sit and wait for the big move. If anyone gets too strong.. you have your massive roving second army go in and sit on what was their well fortified area. The other key is to let the other armies slaughter each other and not to get too involved.. just mess with the biggest one if it becomes threating down the road.
