|
|
| Koreans seem to think it is bizzare that a man over 30 should not be married and wonder why this should be so. I have thus far evaded the question rather than encumbering them with my views on the state of Western women, the raw deal that men get in marriage in the West and the peculiar idea of marriage generally, as I think it is possible that this might cause some resentment. What do other single men generally say? |

Could you elaborate a bit more? I have never thought about marriage very deeply; I still consider myself too young to be considering it seriously. I would like to hear the opinions of someone older and more experienced than I amif you dont mind. |

| I pretend I am shocked that they asked me and I say "But I am so young!" It gets a laugh and deflects the question. |

I don't really want to turn the thread into a rant, but if you're interested the following illustrated blog seems to summarize the issue nicely.

I get harrassed constantly about that at work. Mainly by students, both my younger students (girls who want to be married by eighteen) and my older students, who think one should at least be engaged by my age (married at 25).
I tried to convince them otherwise... but nope, I'd have to reverse what their parents said.
Anyway, my male students don't care. They just want to have mastered Starcraft 2 by then. |

I'm sure I'll get this question and my answer will be
haven't felt like it.
have seen no need to.
more downside than upside.
or perhaps the best would be
why should I become an ajosshi before my time? |

Since my students have always been young, I've always told them that women always say no when I ask them to marry me.
Of course, the real reasons are many.
I don't want kids and that would be the only reason to get married, and I probably still wouldn't get married then because of financial reasons.
Over the years of managing truck drivers, I've heard them all complain about their marriages...how they caught their wives cheating or their wives complained that the drivers didn't make enough money and so on. I would do the payroll for my fleet and most of them had alimony and/or child support coming out of their checks. Some divorced drivers said they were driving so they could have a truck to live in since their wife had taken the house in the divorce. It seems like women pretty much always win the house in divorces.
I've dated American and Korean women who financially raped their ex-husbands in divorce and the husbands had been the ones working hard and had been paying for everything already while the women leached until the Big Divorce Court Payday.
No thanks. If I want a wife, I'll just borrow one for a while. |
