I was informed by co teacher on Monday evening that I would have both this Thursday and Friday off work, and had made plans for a long weekend elsewhere, but today at another school at the end of my last my class my co teacher there said something to me about having to come in on Friday after all. The thing is I no for certain that the school will definitely be closed on Friday so I don't know why I should be expected to come in for the sake of it.
I'm kinda thinking about not turning up on Friday and instead stay with my girlfriend in Suwon instead. If I'm asked later why I didn't show up; I'll just make out that I must have misunderstood my co teacher when she said to come in on Friday.
What do people here think about this plan of action? Am I being unreasonable in not wanting to come in on Friday if I've no classes to teach?
Also I should point out that I normally only have one class at 1pm on Friday before going to another school at 1:40 but I'm still supposed to at my desk by 8:30 AM all the same.

depends on where you are in relation to the job- ie have you been there 1 month, or 8 months. Koreans dont seem tp pull sickys too often and always appear on time. typical though of a hagwon to want you in the school for no real reason...

If the school will be closed, how can you come in? Won't the doors be locked?

Obviously, somebody will be there and for all I know they'll probably expect me to teach my one (1st and 2nd grade) after school class at 1pm.

I wouldn't lie about a misunderstanding, but that's because I prefer to be up front about things. If it were me I'd tell, not ask, them that I'm not coming in on Friday. I'd tell them that since all the other teachers have the day off I should too, and that I already have plans for that day that I don't want to cancel.

It's not like they're going to fire you.

I wouldn't try to argue the fairness angle - enough Korean teachers in Gyeonggi-do public schools have complained to the ministry about native teachers unfairly being paid more for fewer hours than them that GEPIC officials have ordered all their schools to keep native English teachers "busy" with more office hours, etc.

If you really feel you need the extra day (or half-day) off I think you should just tell them that you've already made plans to travel somewhere in Korea (like the film festival in - wherever the hell it is...)

As long as they can notify the parents of the after-school class students the school shouldn't mind.

If you're in Gyeonggi province, I think the officials contacted schools today about a bunch of stuff ...
