The cold is coming and I imagine I will be spending a lot more time indoors basking in the warmth of my filing cabinet apartment.
I get back from the gym and sit in my hovel, vegetating on the computer or rotting my brain playing the ps2. I've never experienced a Korean winter or anything remotely as cold as it's likely to get. I need some tips for maintaining readiness.
How do you people stay active and avoid packing on the tonnage when it gets chilly? |

Get on the motorbike and visit the tourist spots. No crowds to deal with and the winter scenery looks great in the photographs. Sure its cold riding (cold enough to freeze the dangly bits off a plastic walrus in fact) but dress thickly and take regular coffee breaks at the fuel stations.
Actually prefer this time of year to the summer... |

Buy a jump rope. Use it at home if you have the space. See if you can head up to your roof if you dont. |

I go to the gym 5 days/week for about 1 1/2 hours, but I am wondering if coming home and sitting on my ass on weekends is going to sabotage my training.
Any thoughts? |

go skating, play hockey, go skiing, play squash, go bowling, etc. There are lots of winter sports or indoor sports you can participate in. How about some martial arts?
Can you skate? I'm running a hockey team that is open to beginners if you are interested. |

I go into a sort of torpor-like state to conserve my energy and put on insulative fat. I also stop showering as the grease that accumulates is detterant to cold and damp. |

Not if you keep your diet sensible. I've done the same thing in Ottawa-I don't do winter sports or walking around outside, I was fine.
However, the temptation to give in and have a carb-heavy diet right before the winter solstice is strong
Have fun |

I doubt it. If you don't eat pizza all the time and eat sensibly you should be fine.
I don't think of teaching as a high calorie burning job anyways, for the most part I am just standing around using my mouth and sometimes arms when writing something. I bet I burn more calories walking to the class than during the time I am there.
ALSO and this is what I plan to do, with holidays and nothing to do, up your training at the gym. 1hr a day of running/biking will take the fat off in no time. |

Last winter, I'd hurt my knee so couldn't run much. I went to the gym. This winter, I'm running. I'm still in Canada, so it's sort of cold now (-5 to -15 C), but I wear thermal stuff that wicks away the sweat and a shell and gore-tex shoes, so I'm fine. Sometimes, my face hurts; other than that, I'm not cold. Could use a better (more high-tech, breathable?) shell--frost collects under mine. But it's not cold, just weird.
If you want to exercise outdoors, you can try to find some appropriate clothing...I'm not sure how readily available this stuff is in Korea. (Any winter runners here?). If not, going to the gym and watching your diet should be fine....you might be slipping aerobically, but I don't know what you do in the gym, or what you did outside before. If you retain your muscle mass, your metabolism shouldn't slow down too much.
Best of luck. |
