...I will in all likelihood be breaking my contract after 6 months, having been here 12 months already. This is because I have a job opportunity abroad in an area I want to pursue a career in.
I work with Epik and I just wondered exactly what the consequences are for this. I realise after 6 months I will not have to pay back the airfare or any holiday taken, but I wondered if Epik ever try to claim this even when they shouldn't, or they try to withhold any salary, etc? I am sure it depends a bit on your local POE, but does anyone have first-hand experience of Epik dodgy dealing?

If you went home or something and was flown back, then I would negotiate with them before you leave. I left on good terms and will hopefully be paid for my final month with my first school.
You'll need to do this as your old school will have to sign a letter of release in order to work at another school. Immigration may not like that you worked only 1/2 of your contract period if it's a new one. There is a 3/4 rule where you have to work 75% of your contract period before going to another school. If you are getting a new E2 visa, then this may not apply.
However, if your situation is that you have stayed in Korea for 1.5 years, then I see no reason why airfare would have to be reimbursed. If you're at a second school, then they didn't have to pay any airfare to begin with. |
