Look, if you don't want to support Beijing 2008, by all means, do not. You don't have to have a good reason to prefer Coke over Pepsi. Vote with your wallet.

But, mind you, if you think you're achieving anything politically by boycotting, you're deceiving yourself. Its just another opinion in a sea of opinions. And the CCP has weathered, and is weathering, larger challenges than a bunch of narcissist Westerner-driven boycotts.

The Calgary games turned a profit on the money borrowed alone. If the government grants are factored in (the construction of the Olympic Stadium and park at state expense and sold to the games for 1$) the games were a loss. In addition, there was zero long term economic benefit from the games.

But if we assume that 1$ was fair value for this infrastructure (and it might be, long term) they were the FIRST and LAST winter games to have been profitable.

Calgary didn't build an Olympics Stadium. All they did was add temporary stands at the end of an already existing stadium (McMahon Stadium). But aside from that, I think you could be right.... I don't know and really don't care to check the facts about it.

Then it is a good thing that my prof didn't fact-check my essay!

Anyways, even if I'm wrong, one profitable games shouldn't be evidence that hosting the games is likely to be profitable. And Vancouver is already so far over budget that the Montreal games are likely to be a better point of reference anyhow.

Well, now when I think of it, they built an indoor stadium/arena (seating about 20,000). Now mainly used for ice hockey. Cost about 100 million Canadian. Maybe that's what you meant. As for an actual outdoor stadium, they did not build a new outdoor stadium.

I'm not sure what you need an outdoor stadium for in the Winter Olympics, except for maybe opening and closing ceremonies. If someone is hosting the Summer Olympics, then I could see the need. Good for Calgary that they didn't build a new outdoor stadium. Not everything has to be new and sparkly.
