While I was student teaching English in a middle school in NY, my cooperating teacher told me there is no worse proofreader than yourself. It's true. You know what you've written so, when re-reading, your eyes automatically skip ahead causing you to miss simple mistakes that you've made. These mistakes are often easily detected by other people. This is why resumes are easily rejected and its best to have someonelse look them over. I didn't realize how easy it is until I made my own website. Almost always when I go back and read something I thought was perfect ages ago at the time, I pick up errors. I'm sure what I'm writing now is full of them. Ugh! |

No, you can't proofread your own work, for the very reasons you've described; after you've looked at it a few times, you can't see your own errors. That's when it's time to turn it over to someone with a fresh perspective. I teach a writing class, and after the students have written their first draft, they exchange papers with a partner who (hopefully) reads it thoroughly and discerns errors in ideas and relevance. Then they write a second draft, and check their own grammar, spelling and punctuation. And then, they write a final draft, with all of those factors put together. By then, a real piece of work (hopefully) emerges. It's systematic and methodical, but it seems to work. No budding Steinbecks here yet, but one never knows. |

I can proofread my own work and that of others w/ease & accuracy. Hell, it might be the only skill I have... and there should only be one "the" in CaptPorridge's quotation.... |

Recently, a friend sent me an e-mail asking me to write a letter of reference for him for a university instructor position. He included info on the person to whom the letter should be addressed. He misspelled the name of the person doing the hiring, the name of the uni (which was also the name of the city) and another part of the address. I hate to think what his resume looks like (and no, he didn't get a call about the job). |

No.
Just look at something you wrote the next day. Pretend it is not yours. Don't look at the name on the paper. |

I just sent off three job application cover letters yesterday. There is no spell check on this old dinosaur as far as I can see so I had to re-read and re-check my letter about 10 times.
Anyway, I finally felt it was perfect and sent them off, only to read afterwards that I am familiar with certain "principals" and I was looking forwards to their "repsonse".
Guess I won't be getting those jobs! |

I really hate that...happened to me so many times. I considered hiring a resume writer. |

put it aside for as long as poss - once you break it out again, your errors will be blatantly obvious. |
