How the average citizen talks on a wrong-number phone call to an English speaking person.

Level 1: Speaks Korean after hearing the person answer "hello?" then continues to speak Korean after hearing, "I don't speak Korean, do you speak English?"

Level 2: Just keeps saying "Yobosayo?" over and over, hoping the foreigner on the other end will magically start speaking Korean.

Level 3 : Doesn't say anything. Just listens in shocked silence, but doesn't hang up the phone.

Level 4: Doesn't say anything. Just listens, hoping to get a free English pronunciation lesson.

Level 4: Says, "Sorry." then hangs up.

Level 5: Says, "I'm sorry, wrong number." then hangs up.

I'm afraid most Koreans would be in the 1-range.

How are level 1 and 2 actually different from each other? And why would level 3 (either) be higher than 1 or 2 when they didn't even speak?

Koreans take fucking forever to hang up a wrong number. WHY?

And when the vast majority of Koreans do their conversing on handphones into which all their friends' numbers are pre-programmed, how is it possible to get so many wrong numbers?

That's the main reason I tend to just hang up the phone if I don't recognize the number. If I don't know the number, I'll just keep responding "hello" until they get scared and hang up. Even then it takes like 30 seconds to end the wrong number.

I once even had the person calling me go and get someone else to come and tell me that it was a wrong number, as if I didn't get that part already.

I called to get a subscription to an ENGLISH newspaper and the person couldn't understand me and I had to get a Korean to translate for me. Then when I called to cancel my subscription they also couldn't understand me and I had to get a translator.

I've had this problem with Koreans calling me and they won't stop speaking Korean though I've said hello and not Yobeseyo. And they will go on it seems. It is as if they all of a sudden expect you to speak Korean. I guess that is natural to some extent. But, if a guy says hello and is a foreigner, it makes sense to end the conversation quickly.

I want to become the Yobeseyo Master. I sometimes get a call and answer in English, most of the time the caller hangs up but once I had a foriegner that said, "I am very sorry. Wrong number."

Pretty nice to speak in Korean and get some free practice over the phone. I am now able to ask for someone, ask who they are, what they want, tell them they called the wrong number and get some information for the missus.
