RE: Tutoring Allowance

Is the 100,000 per school standard with EPIK as I teach at 2-schools and am not getting an extra 100k

It's in the EPIK contract, Article 13.4 (Other Benefits)
4. Employees working for more than one school are eligible for a multiple school teaching allowance of 100,000 KRW for two schools or 150,000 KRW for three schools per month.

It's marked as Touring Pay on my pay slip.

^ Shocked

Really?

I'll be viewing section 13.4 very closely this evening and should it be required, I'll be polishing my 5hit-kickers for when I returneth on the 12th.

Is this standard EPIK policy? Has it just been introduced?

*EDIT*
I can't see anything here about it.

I applied for EPIK 2 years ago. This was before I had my TEFL, and after I had bailed on my first contract after 6 months. They offered me 2.2.

My mate was telling me that they will be dropping the multiple school allowance. He's 1+ with EPIK and with contract for next year (September), he will be losing 100,000 a month. This guy has loads of qualifications and has been teaching EFL for ten years. Only in Korea, can you re-sign and make less money.

As I thought, there's nothing in my contract about extra cash for teaching at more than one school.

Typical, if something is too good to be true, then it probably is.

Do you work for EPIK? If so, that's very interesting - I thought they would just have the one generic contract they'd we all sign.

It wasn't in my contract but we do get 100,000 for working at an extra school. I was notified of it before my first payday. It was a nice surprise.

Yeah, I'm EPIK. Perhaps I should flap my arms and stamp my feet a little.

I just renewed my EPIK contract in Chungnam. The levels have changed twice in the last ten months. I started as a level 2 because of a CELTA. I get 2.4. Which is 2.2 base plus 100 000 won rural bonus and 100 000 myeon bonus.

BS. Dos have you got your new contract to peruse? Isn't there anything in the 13.3 or 13.4 about the extra cash. I know now that the EPIK is a standard contract and should be the same as it is for you as it is for me. You should move up a scale to 2+, like me. You already get 2.2. So if you point with your finger at the new bit then you should get the 100 000 extra for your 2 schools. Although you did say you don't have the rural bonus. By the sounds of it, remain slightly, you know I'd love to stay but it's not really in my interest if there's not a slight increase in my beautiful Korean won pay!!!! They'll cave in. Give you the red carpet treatment maybe buy you a crown.

I only got a 50 000 raise so now I'm 2.45. Which is fine because I'm in a really good situation. Which is loads of cash to me, compared to my situation last year, and I get 400 000 extra a month for extra classes. I send home 670 quid a month, the rest I spend on slacks!

EPIK contracts aren't standard. They are generic and modified by each province as the province sees fit.

@ Dome Vans

Yeah, it's something I'm going to have to think about when I renegotiate in a month or so although, I suspect I'll just get the " We don't know what you're talking about" line from my Korean paymasters.

As this will be my first attempt at tackling the fine art of contract renewal, I'm going to have to plan my attack carefully if I'm to rinse as much juice as I can out of them.

Yep, I have heard about this too. I was actually supposed to get the contract without it.

Idiots. Korean teachers should learn English, and then they won't even need to invite foreigners here just to insult them.

GB - sounds like a poor rate for someone with your credentials. But...where are you? I'm with EPIK in Cheonbuk. I've been here almost three years. My average is 3.2 mil. a month. Standard hours, but I also do a few gifted [ESL] programs too. Good work environments; plenty of time off...both in the schools and general days off etc. I also do some editing for the local director and assist with teacher-training from time to time. My academic background is as follows: MA; M.Ed; B.Ed; BA; AOCAD...scholar (but also an artist and musician who enjoys my free-time to develop artistic projects). SK is great for that.

Send me an email and I can get you possibly lined up for a good position here in our system. I'm right on the sea...nice city...good fishing and island beaches nearby. Forget Seoul...dirty place with endless noise. Join the community of expats here. Cool group. Lot's of development going on here in this seaport. The next 'Busan' is to be built here.
