Because they lifted the ban of imports of American beef of over 30 months old (which is banned in US), all those old American cows will get imported here (most other countries banned them). All MCD cases reported have come from old cows btw.
Also the prions are found in bones. You need to realize that 99% of koreans boil bones to make soups, and studies have proven that boiling does not destroy the prions.
The above and the gene factor sure put the Koreans at very high risk. |
Better safe than 1% sorry. While whether it's 1% or much much less is debatable, I guess the sentiment is that they just don't want to be lab rats for future empirical studies.

You can't really verify the origin of beef you are eating at all the public places. It can be either unclear or disguised. Anyway, lots of talks and attempts at clarification are going on now. We will see. |

| Since I came to Korea I haven't been sick. I once thought it was because of the 한약 (traditional medicine) that I took, now I wonder if it is not related to the antibiotics in my system? |

| The simple solution is to not buy US beef. If it sells extremely badly here, the imports will shrink and eventually disappear. |

| In some respects (economically) they are quite right. Many countries use the system this way: Knock out the local competition by making them drop their prices so much in order to be competitive alongside your cheaper imports - soon they will start moving out of the industry. When that happens on a large scale, start raising your prices. |

| I was talking to my co worker about this . When I brought up the topic she seemed furious about it . When I asked her why she said that American beef was dangerous which set me off into a rant . I don't know much about the issue but even where I live in Africa is cleener and more sanitary than Korea . How could you make such an assumption without thinking it through for yourself ? Get out more you idiots . |

This happened in England but now the lure of cheap meat has passed and now we are back to people choosing to buy the local meat at a slightly higher price but at a much superior quality. But it has taken a lot of championing of the 'less distance travelled card' and support your local farmer card. In England now the farmers markets are very popular.
I think they'll flood the market here. But I think that it won't work. Koreans are a little too nationalist to give into American beef. |

Nah, that doesn't help with keeping you healthy, it just maxes out your levels of qi. I bet you could move objects telepathically by this point, if you focus. |

| I'll bet the anti-importers are just brushing off the old 90's anti-rice imports campaigns. In those days, it was widely known that Koreans and Korean rice were uniquely suited to each other and that Koreans who went to the US and ate American rice were 'weak' and sick all the time. |
