Man..I hate this time of year! I can't control myself! So.....
I am looking for a new video card. Question: I currently have a 7900GTX OC 512ddr3 ram. What can I get that would be more powerful than this one (I know of stuff...but want to get your recommendations). |

But...I was just looking at this:

for a mere 3fps, I would rather save a butt-load of money and go with the 8800GTX. I mean after all, the 9000 series is using the same technology found in the 8000 series. |

lol. yep. I don't like those brands though. I want BFG, XFX, or EVGA. I have never had a problem with them; why fix something that aint broke!!! |

| Yep...take a pass on the 9000 series from Nvidia. 750,000 for the GX2 or 550,000 for the 3870X2. Clear choice there. Yeah, the GX2 is faster, but my goodness...Nvidia really are losing their marbles. Have you read some of the trash talk coming from the Nvidia camp these days? Whiny little babies. Go ATI! |

Indeed. Nvidia seem to be out of ideas at the moment. ATI are about to kick their butt with the new 4800 series out in a couple of months.
RV770 will launch as Radeon 4800 and will make its way into the FireStream stream processor and FireGL workstation cards. Both GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory will be supported by the chip, but ATI itself will only be offering GDDR5 cards. The Radeon 4850 version is set to come to market with an 800+ MHz core (the final clock has not been specified yet and will not be available until the final qualification is completed), while the 4870 will be the first mass-production GPU with a clock speed higher than 1 GHz. Prototype RV770 boards were clocked at about 1.05 GHz.

If you really want a killer card, wait for this HD4870. 1ghz clock speed!! Some card manufacturers will no doubt stick 1GB of GDDR5 memory on that!!

For now, at this moment, the HD3870x2 is the best bang for buck. They're going for 450,000 right now on Danawa. |

Here's the thing: I tend to be loyal in all aspects of life (i.e. when it comes to friends, where I shop, etc.). I have never had a problem what-so-ever with Nvidia; they make great products. Should I really switch over?
Which would you choose and why?
8800GTX or the HD3870? |

Why be loyal to a graphics chipmaker???
I understand being loyal to a friend or even a shopkeeper that your family have used for decades.....sure, fine. But a graphics chipmaker???
Believe me, I was Nvidia for 4 years until the 3870 came along and then I dropped them like a hot potato because they couldn't get the 8800GT onto the shelves last November when I had planned to build a new rig. ATI had lots of 3870's out so I went with that. Pretty happy with my choice.
Also, Nvidia and Vista had a long running problem with GPU driver errors. That put me off Nvidia even more.
It makes a lot more sense to judge the manufacturer of the card rather than the chipset maker. EVGA, MSI, Sapphire, XFX et al.....It's these guys who build the cards.
It's in our best interest for Nvidia and ATI to knock each other off the top spot now and then. Nvidia have been dropping the ball recently after almost two years on top. There's a good chance ATI will rule for a while now.
CL, the 8800GTX is over 3 times the price of the HD3870!! An 8800GTX is over 500,000. The 3870 is 180,000. You can't compare those two cards.
Do you mean the HD3870x2? At 450,000 I think the HD3870x2 is the best high-end card out there for value. It can compete with the 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra in some games. But at a lower price. If you're worried about buying an ATI card because you don't know the manufacturers....then go with Sapphire. They have the best rep for ATI cards. |

Agreed. As far as their current lineup, they are exhibiting reactionary behavior.
I was referring more to their reactions at possibly being squeezed out of the future. Graphics solutions are in for a major revolution and its looking like Nvidia is the only one without a dance partner.
CL...put your loyalty in things other than graphics card makers. I understand your sentiments, and echoed them at certain points in the past. Those points usually coincided with a new purchase; first with Nvidia, then with ATI...I think you see what I am getting at. Root for the winning team and change like a fog. |

Then, I need to read up on ATI cards then. Does anyone have a good website that gives me a history of the cards? I have to tell you though, nvidia has never given me problems.  |
