We're going to be in Kyungju for a day and a night. What are the top places to take pictures of? Temples, cool sights, etc.
We'll be driving...
Thanks in advance for your replies
All the best,

| Been there, done that. If looking at big mounds of dirt is your thing, then go for it! |

The tombs are cool to see specially in the misty early morning hours or dusk as the setting sun makes a great back drop as well as seeing an old astrological observatory. I was impressed with it's size as it's bigger than I imagined. The pictures don't do it justice. Number one sight for me was Bulguksa Temple. I was really impressed with this temple as it kind of gave me the impression of a temple fortress. It should look really great now with the Spring growth surrounding it. Go EARLY as it will get swamped with visiters just before noon. It's a lengthy bus ride there from the city itself but well worth it. There are a number of other great things to see but it'll take at least two days.
I can recommend a neat little place to sleep if ya need... |

Well...they're everywhere. You can't miss'em. If you don't
keep your eyes on the road while you're driving you'll probably
drive into or over one. It seemed like they were scattered
thoughout the heart of the town. |

When I was there the museum had a bunch of little ceramic dolls doing kinky sex things with each other. Maybe not good for pictures, but since you're travelling with the wife, maybe you could get some new ideas. |

The book my son and wife translated is pretty good for those wishing to tour around the city:
A Field Guide to History: Gyeongju (ISBN 978-89-7199-288-3) |

Yep, there is a little tourist info booth right beside the train station. They have great maps of the area and all the sights worth seeing.
Some of the sights.
Bulguka
The tombs in the downtown area.

| Try to find the 한옥마을. Pretty cool. You can stay a night in a traditional house. If you're lucky like we were, you'll wake up to a ceremony of traditional music with a bongo truck guy parked across the street blasting adverts about onion prices. |

Kyungju is one of my favorite places to visit. You'll really enjoy it.
The places ajgeddes mentions are all good.
Also, if you go to Pulguksa, you can take a bus to the top of the mountains up above the temples to Seokoram. There's a massive gold Buddha statue that was buried at the top on this hillside. Kind of the middle of nowhere ...Must have been a lot of work to get it there ...pretty impressive. |

Whew! THAT place was crowded!
Got to see Bulgaksa and the stone budda in the cave. Got a lot of video and pics. Just got home (five hour drive) - stopped in Daejon for lunch, gotta love that city - well planned and really modern. Anyway, I see that someone beat me to posting pics, but I really want to post mine with the zillions of people that I'll have to photoshop out....heh. Korea crowded!
We drove out to the coast last night because we couldn't find a place to stay for the night - stayed in a crappy beachside hotel, but it was nice to hear the waves crashing on the beach...if it wasn't for the loud drunken revelers it would've been perfect! |
