I'm interested in spending a few weeks travelling the countryside... I am wondering if anyone has done this? How? Where did you go? Where did you stay? I'd like to avoid tour buses and stick with public transit whenever possible.
Thanks in advance....

I don't know if you have ever been to the Express Bus Terminal but you can go EVERYWHERE by public transit. This has to be one of the best things about Korea. Just get on a bus and go. Don't be scared, get out of Seoul and see the rest of the country |

One of the coolest things I did in my time in Korea was to go to Jeju island for a week, rent a bike and ride around the island in about 4 days. I saw A LOT of countryside, especially if you do some detours off the main highway and take one of the cross-island highways. Some little old farmers were sure surprised to see me sometimes! |

Go to a long-distance bus terminal. Buy a ticket for any destination ending in -sa. I usually try to stay in the W5,000 price range for day trips. Yes, you will end up going to some temple complex, but you will see interesting things you might want to explore along the way (write down the names of those destinations!) and there will be some sort of accomodations nearby. |
