To get a public school position in Seoul with the prerequisite that your accomodations are in or within 15 minutes of Itaewon. |

Know someone leaving, have connections or be a direct hire.
The chances of it happening from abroad are about slim to none. |

Are the chances better for you to get preference in location of the school and housing if you are a direct hire? I interviewed directly in-person last week and am awaiting approval with the contract offer this coming week. I was told that if I wait until the new hiring period then it is first come first served in that respect. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. |

By direct hire, I meant hired directly by the school...
You will know exactly where you are housed and everything is negotiable if you are here and doing an in person interview with the principal for your job rather than going through ETIS/GEPIK/EPIK/etc.

How do you get directly hired by a school in a public school system? A public school can hire you directly without going through the government agency? Really?? |

Yes, but you have to be here... the school will have to apply to the government for funding for a foreign teacher. |

Walk around to schools in the area you want to work in.
Hand in your bilingual (Korean/English) resume and cover letter.
Chances are that if you go to 10 schools you will get one or two interviews.
If you go to 20-25 you will have a job within a short time.
For the record, I was a direct hire even though I am under the "GEPIK umbrella" (as are all teachers working at a public school in Gyeonggi province. We may have been hired by the school but we are still under the jurisdiction of the provincial office of education.

Not always. My (rural) school got frustrated over being denied a teacher via GEPiK, hired a recruiter, and got my drunken ass as a result.
Mind you, I dare say it's different in a sought after location near Itaewon. |

Classic. If I were a recruiter or a principal, all the buzzers would go off should somebody apply with a stipulation that they had to live near the twon! |

I could care less. If a recruiter wouldn't work with me or a principal wouldn't hire me for that reason, then...next! My reasons would be my business. |

More than 2 years here and I've NEVER had anyone turn to me and say "You know what. I want to LIVE in Itaewon." |

So you think if I use those exact words it would help me? |

I have heard several mention that they would want to live in that area. Perhaps you don't know enough people.
It's really none of your business why I'd want to live in Itaewon. Why did your father sleep with your mother? I've never met anyone who told me they'd like to sleep with your mother. |
