I'm wondering how teachers go about supplementing the fairly lame textbook materials while still covering the same and related vocabulary. The idea seems to be to get the students talking a lot and not being bored. What sort of things do people do? |

I make additional powerpoints (for the vocabs & targeted sentences). The kids seem to respond to these better than the Listen & Repeat in the cdrom.
I also never play the games in the text. The directions don't make sense half of the time. I make power point based games and the kids love it. Most of them are the same format but slight modified and the kids don't even notice it. |

Just try different things every once in a while. If you are a very creative teacher, then this should come easy. The important thing is making sure students understand what you are teaching. I normally use PowerPoint and I once showed many slides of words and pictures of what they mean. I thought students understood what I was saying, but found out later that most were fascinated with the pictures and that was it.
Make sure the lesson isn't too confusing and try to make things relatively simple. I still have students in my middle school class that look up with a blank stare when I ask how they are doing. Try showing pictures, fun little games, word searches, etc. For reviewing words at the end of a unit, I have students play a BINGO game, except there are words put in the place of the numbers. I read a sentence they have already read from the textbook and they have to put a mark over the word if they have it. I pick each word much like regular BINGO, by numbering each word and drawing from a hat. It may seem different, but many of the students, especially the smarter ones, really seem to learn things.
If you are curious how to add words to a BINGO game, you can click on this website and make your very own BINGO set for free http://print-bingo.com/bingo-cards-custom.php. God bless the internet! |

esnips is a great site, a couple users have excellent ESL material posted (ddeubel and gepikteacher especially).
you can also show the kids a short youtube video once in a while that's somehow related to the lesson (i usually choose ones with just music playing in the background, not much English). i use them just to give the kids something different and it holds their attention to the lesson afterwards |

I don't know what level you are teaching but if High school, I'd recommend the Activities to Supplement the H.S. Text by Andrew Finch. So few people know about it but it is excellent. Find parts in my Korea section of SHARING at EFL Classroom 2.0 If anyone wants to share Korean related materials, just go there upload and share! Or download lots of stuff......I've finally settled on an medium expensive but user friendly model. Click the Sharing tab .
