Ten Rules
First, face takes precedence in all relations. Saving face is often more important than honesty.
Second, make a friend first and a client second. Develop a trusting personal relationship with business partners.
Third, 'how' is just as important as 'what' or sometimes more important. Koreans are emotional rather than logical.
Fourth, Identify hierarchy. Korean social life is dominated by a strict hierarchical code.
Fifth, name card is important.
Sixth, adapt to Korean-style negotiation. Koreans are known as forceful negotiators. They are known for taking all they can get, enjoying the practice of brinkmanship.
Seventh, meeting is more effective than writing. Please try to meet and maintain contact as often as possible.
Eighth, time is not always money. Please do not give the impression that you adhere to a time schedule.
Ninth, please understand the English paradox. Koreans think they have a better knowledge of grammatical English than spoken English.
Tenth, culture is communication. Try to adapt to Korean culture.

I'd be interested in seeing a 10 rules for being an American.
I am pretty sure the words arrogant and ignorant will be in one or two, maybe even all of the rules. |

Not true for close friends, so I would not say ALL relationships.

This is SO true. Westerners really need to learn patience here. |

It should be re-titled "Ten Rules for Dealing with Korean Businessmen". It really has more to do with being on a business trip here than living here. |

Lucky these people don't work at a hagwon. You would swear every minute is costing the wonjang 1 000 000 won in lost earnings. |

No no no, Mr. Pink, this is the Korea bashing thread. You want the America bashing thread. That one is a few threads down.

Good post RR. I knew most of that, but a couple of "rules" make a lot of sense suddenly now that I realise its normal practice here. |

I agree. Dealing with a Korean businessman is much different from dealing with a Korean friend or girlfriend. (boyfriend for you ladies) |
