How is Houston treating you so far?
I heard they have NO ZONING between residential and businesses. Wondering what thats like. I'd imagine there would be negatives, but what would be some positives as well? |
Houston's not bad. The job is kicking my butt, but I love my house and since I'm in the 'burbs, I have a pretty short commute.
I love my neighborhood too. You see all sorts of people in all sorts of clothes (western, as well as sarongs and hijabs ... sorry don't know the correct spellings) and there's a mosque around the corner.
Houston has plenty to do with a good theater and museum scene. Unfortunately, there isn't anything really distinctive about Houston so I can't get anyone to come down & visit! Kinda sucks since my family's all in the northwest.
I loved the relatively dry winter weather (though I missed snow!), but the humidity is coming back to remind me of why I won't live here forever. LOL
Don't know anything about zoning laws here. Where I live I don't see any real problems. Most houses are part of developments so it's not like there're tons of shops interspersed with houses. Maybe it's more of an issue in downtown, but everything seems pretty well organized where I live.
Best part is that there's a great Korean area just far enough away that I don't feel compelled to eat kalbi once a week, but close enough for me to swing by & pick up kimchee every couple of months or so.

Um, yeah. And she probably doesn't teach at a charter school with an extended school day. *sigh* I miss going home at 4:30.
My typical day here runs about 6:30 to 5 or so... and I go home with work left undone. It's tough, but then I go to events like senior signing day last week where I see one of my boys who had EVERY obstacle you could think of stacked against him... and he's signing his letter of intent to a 4 year school that's offered him scholarships.
That's why I do what I do.

Well, I have a mortgage (lucky me...I beat the mortgage crisis by about a day... literally). Kinda sucks, but it's MINE...and someday I might even have the money to decorate it. LOL In the meantime, I'm enjoying doing some simple landscaping and I've just put in my garden. Yay! |

Woo hoo for Austin! I'm here bumming off my family between contracts, got to build up my tan now while I've got the chance.
I spent 10 years in Houston sandwiched between 8 and 9 years in Austin. Houston's main problem is that it's just too damn big, and it seems like everything is a chain. There are hardly any independent places left. Unfortunately, Austin seems to be following the trend as well. |
