So say you had the opportunity to ask someone out this weekend.

Where would you go, what would you do? We are both near Suwon.

I need some ideas- but nothing too date-ish (ie. "dinner and a movie"), we're not that type. 1) I don't really want it to seem like a date, just more chill and "getting to know you" . . . although it kind of would be a date. 2) We're both gay, liberal, hippie-ish *insert wisecrack here* and just generally laid back.

She's been here 8 months, and I've been here 1 month.

Ideas?

Sincerely,
Desperate Dyke

Climb to the top of Hwaseong on the western side (better view than the east), preferably just before sunset, but another time will do is sunset is too corny. Bring deet, kimbap, and (most important) makkolli. That's the best on a warm summer/spring evening.

second best: the pub crawl in Ingyedong is alright.

another idea: if you really want to deviate from the "date" formula, a trip to the black market in Songtan might be fun.

finally: i hear there are some Suwoners who volunteer at an orphanage here in town on Saturdays. That might give you a lot to talk about (not to mention serious "sensitivity" points)

You can take the train in and walk around the Namdaemun market in Seoul. Always plenty of zany stuff going on around there.

Just a note, there is no Hot Doug's in Seoul... : (

It's somewhere near Hwaseo Station, I think. The people who told me about it are part of the Facebook group "Suwon Shenanigans." Saturday night the orphanage had some people in Suwon Station looking for volunteers (I think it's mostly battered kids, like a foster home or something, not sure), so they would probably love an extra pair of hands.

If they're already in Suwon, I think Paldalmun market is good enough. Not as big, obviously, but it's cheap, plenty of variety, and a lot closer.

I think this is a philosophy that all the peoples of the world can get behind.

There's a seperate group for the orphanage on Facebook...if you just search for Suwon...and then look under groups...you'll be fine.

Oh...and lesbians are good people...some of my best lesbians are friends Very Happy

Is there any similar volunteer organizations for orphans in Seoul? Or perhaps other non-profit/charitable organizations?

Just a word about volunteering: It is beyond the status of your E-2 visa and technically illegal. You are supposed to get immigration's approval. Sometimes that's through a phone call, sometimes that's through an official request (and 60,000 won fee) and usually people don't get approval at all b/c it's rare for immigration to bust volunteers.

Yeah, unless you're Jean Valjean, nobody's gonna deport you for "Visa Violation: Altruism"

And lesbians don't steal my women. I only date attractive ones (jk).

I'm amazed this hasn't descended into a thread about how much everyone (well, the men anyway) loves lesbians. I recall a thread a year or so ago about Korean lesbians meeting at some park in Sinchon/Sincheon (the one near Hongdae, not Jamsil) that was significantly more puerile.

Oh, and for the record I love lesbians too. Very Happy

There's a restaurant in Suwon Station that serves a descent Kimchi bulgogi curry. This is obviously not impressive for a date but might be nice to try on your own.
