tiger you need to change it to 15000!!! OMG this is crazy
I was in yangon last year and it was poor then but people seemed happy
right after that the monks protested and the Junta started to kill people
now 15000 people have died and millions homeless..
such a beautiful country with so much fantastic cultural assets! the junta needs to get out and myanmar can open up to better tourism and rebuilt
but a country like this we will not see the speedy rebuilding as we saw in phuket after the tsunami!

15000!!! america cries about 4000 soldiers dying in iraq or 3000 soldiers dying in 911.. 15000 just died in one day, 250.000 died in the tsunami

unbelievable!! Rolling Eyes

It is horrible if 3,000 die in New York or 10,000 in Myanmar. In both cases, you are hearing about a tragedy. Two friends of mine recently went to that country, and they told me the people are very pleasant and friendly. I am sorry this happened to them.

The US and EU are donating heaps of releif money, but the Junta are insisting on distributing it themselves. You can guess where the Burmese gov't would like to direct the donations, seeing as they're one of the poorest countries on earth. Furthermore, they're refusing to grant disaster assessment teams into the country. Burma's reclusiveness is directly harming its own people once again.

Could you imagine if this happened in North korea?

It did allegedly happen in North Korea with supposed massive floods a year ago. All kinds of aid was flowing in but unlike this case, they did not open up the country at all and foreign journalists were never allowed in.

Are there any chances for relief missions or anything like that?

The only group I've heard being allowed in for disaster relief is Save the Children. I'm not sure why just them, but obviously so many people are suffering and not much is being done to help them. Very sad. My Thai wife cried about it last night.

Same thing'd happen..all the aid gets siezed by the army and corrupt ruling power. Same as African states too...

The effects of this disaster are more severe because of the poverty of the people. Third world countries suffer worse, unfortunately.. and our thoughts are with those poor people.
Myanmar has also been one of the countries worst hit by global warming- they're losing coastal land to the sea faster than the louisiana swamps.

All commisserations to the victims and families.

But human tragedy aside...

If any country settles, develops, dykes, barrages or concretes its coastal swamplands it has simply damaged its natural sea defences.
Only last week in KOREA a "freak wave" (local tidal wave) killed several people near Gunsan. Why? well this area used to have thousands of hectares of coastal sandflat until they built a wall over it 2 years back. The result? Rising sea tides got nowhere to go anymore.

Hey Dick! How are we suppossed to feel about our fallen soldiers and 911 victims? All tragedy is significant. Get a clue!

After I read an article on this yesterday, I had a feeling the number of dead would grow. But 22,000! How incredibly sad.

If the ruling junta resisted having Myanmar becoming more open before, they've sure got a lot of pressure to do it now.
I feel very badly that once again the average Burmese has to pay the price for a lousy, corrupt regime.

But the superstitious minds of the generals are probably still too busy freaking out about the bad karma they brought onto themselves for shooting all those monks recently.
