Phnom Penh, April 3: Cambodia has suspended marriages between foreigners and Cambodians amid concerns over an explosion in the number of brokered unions involving poor, uneducated women, an official said on Thursday.
The move follows an International Organisation for Migration (IOM) report highlighting the plight of an increasing number of Cambodian brides migrating to South Korea in marriages hastily arranged by brokers who make large profits.
Some 1,759 marriage visas were issued by South Korea in 2007, up from just 72 in 2004, the report said. While no systematic exploitation was uncovered, several cases of abuse did raise a red flag with the government, said You Ay, secretary of state with the Women's Affairs Ministry.
"Seven women have returned from South Korea because they could not stand what happened to them there," You Ay told AFP. "The government has temporarily suspended all (paperwork) for Cambodia women to marry foreigners," she said.
You Ay commented that the ban, which was approved last week, would be lifted after the government developed a legal framework to address mixed marriages. "This suspension is to prevent human trafficking through marriage," she said, adding that while the brides often receive as little as USD 1,000, agencies can make tens of thousands of dollars on each marriage.
"Cambodia is working to strengthen the laws on marriage," You Ay said. IOM project coordinator John McGeoghan said that while the report targeted marriages between Cambodians and South Koreans, the potential for problems exists globally and that brokered unions needed to be better regulated. |

The South Korean embassy in Cambodia earlier this week halted issuing residency visas to Cambodian women wishing to marry Korean men. |

Well, the philpppines caught on to the fact that too many women sent to Korea end up abused, and now Cambodia has figured it out.
Vietnam is next.
Pretty soon, poor Korean men won't have anyone left to marry them. |

I guess the russian mail order brides have dried up too. Ever see a Korean with his russian mail order bride?
Yeah, they Koreas will have to reunite. Think of the vast untapped reserves of pure Korean women up north. How happy they'll be to move south and marry a man with electricity. |

Actually, quite a few women I know here would probably prefer living in North Korea to remaining in their current marriages to Korean men.  |

Actually, Vietnam has started implementing a new law due to such a problem with Korean marriages. Vietnam government now require interview with the groom and the bride. If they cannot communicate in some common language, the marriage will be rejected over and over and over until they give up.  |

Well, two things: 1 is their constitution and 2 is merely hope that their courts can be bothered with honoring the thing. My comment was more of 2 than 1. |

| After white males serving as the global whipping boys of last resort for years, it's good to see someone else being villified for a change. Korean men have long been rumoured to be among the most likely to misbehave themselves as sex tourists and such but have always seemed to get away with it. I wonder if female sexual predators and abusive spouses will ever be held to account. |

Yeah my GF was HK chinese. Her and her friends like to go to Cebu a lot. When I told her I had visited Korea on holiday, she was like "oh my god we stay clear of korean guys on holiday!" I view Koreans on holiday like I view their approach to car ownership. See, car ownership was at first something only very, very rich people could aspire too. It was like being in the old days, being a noble mounted on a horse. People got out of your way. Here comes one of the king's yangban! Car owners I think saw it that way. Even in the year 2000 I got the distinct impression cars, not pedestrians, had the right of way. Although not legally, drivers just assumed it.
Anyway, Koreans on holiday is again another one of those "ohhh we're like royalty and politicians abroad", especially when they're among the lesser brown people of SE Asia. "Ah, I'm like the lord and these people are like the peasants I've come to bring civilization to". |

That attitude seems to be also prevalent among quite a few teachers here when it comes to Korea. |

There were two news articles yesterday one about a British guy being saved from lynching after beating his girlfriend in Cambodia.
The other about a German man in prison now for beating his wife and breaking her arms. |

It's more prevalent amongst Korean males-I can respond to you this way because you're not a Koreean male. Respect and all that. |
