So during March my department head told me that I had to start teaching afterschool classes. I was ok with this, since the hourly rate was more than was stated in my contract, and I was going to be at school during these times anyway.

Since the it has been endless problems, including the classes starting without anybody telling me, changes of venue at the last minute and so on and so on. The latest has been trying to get my pay for the first term's lessons. The classes ended three weeks ago, and still nothing in my account. I asked again today about it, and the answer was that the kids have not paid the school, and so there is no money to pay me. So I MIGHT get paid at the end of the month. Or maybe next month. Maybe.

The thing is that the new afterchool class cycle starts on Tuesday. Now if I was back home I would just plain refuse to do any more afternoon classes until I got paid for the work I have already completed. And I'm thinking I'm going to have to do the same here. No pay, no work.

Thoughts, anybody?

[Edit] I'm at a public middle school

Don't do any more until you are paid. For good measure, I would tell them that you want monthly pay in future, and if you are not paid you will stop teaching mid-schedule.

If they wanted to pay you, they would. They could get the funds from elsewhere, if they really wanted to. They simply don't think it is important to pay you. You need to teach them otherwise.

What are the consequences of refusing? Has anyone done this?

I'm not having the best of times with my school, especially not with my fuddy duddy department head, and I'm not sure whether things will improve or go to hell if I make a stand here. And I've still got 10 months to go...

I refused and told them show me the money. They paid me a few days later so I started teaching again.

If your dept. head is a bullhead, don't worry about the relationship. Things won't improve unless you draw a line that they should not cross.

The question should more accurately be thought of as what are the consequences of them refusing to pay you, the answer being you'll stop teaching.

You are not refusing anything other than being a doormat.

Well, I guess what I have to do is pretty clear. No more classes until the cash is in my account. If Ramen can do it, so can I! And a doormat I am not. An all-singing, all-dancing monkey perhaps, but no doormat.

Scouse Mouse - that's a good tip about getting paid monthly. It will take a lot of the uncertainty out of the process, and I get all my pay in one go.

Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated.

Just be patient...they can't pay until all the money has been collected.

Ha. I think we all know that the parents have clearly already paid. Why would the school let them pay AFTER the classes. Parents pay up front for all my extra classes and I get paid each month. So the school gets to keep all the money gaining interest for a few months.

Actually, this is untrue. Spiff is correct, they pay at the end. In my opinion I would rather wait a few extra weeks and have happy students and parents, rather than piss them off by stopping classes and have my attendance drop.

I have been paid up to a month late (after school pay not regular pay).. but have always received my payment. It isn't really a big deal to me.

^ it doesn't really matter if the parents pay before or after the classes here, the point is the OP has been patient and waited for 3 weeks already. the new set of extra classes will start in less than a week, and still no money from the last set. unacceptable.

tell your co-teacher that the new set of extra classes will have to be postponed until you are paid for the last set. as simple as that.

on a side note...

i believe extra classes are optional - it may depend on where you're located, but i was told by my recruiter as well as some foreigners that spoke during my orientation that it's your choice.

If you are GEPIK it's a confllict of the contract.

Contract says overtime is paid at the end of the month.

but...

parents pay afterwards so it takes time waiting.

You'd be so screwed if you stopped classes. You would loose Ss. I get paid per student in my AF program which presently, is working out to my favor as It's much more than say a 40,000 per hour set rate.

I'm quite sure the school's account balance isn't at zero. So, they pay you at a set time, and they collect the money later. Agree to that before you agree to a program.

but why should they.. in the afterschool program you are an independent contractor.. a different contract is signed (at least in my case)..

the after school program for a contract teacher is a GOOD thing.. if you can't see that you don't deserve the extra money.

Never signed a contract for one. If a parent doesn't pay, do you just take the pay cut, or do you phone up the parent yourself? It sounds like the person managing TeeBee's program is inept.
