So I'm standing there teaching, when one of my 5th graders pipes up--'US BEEF BAD--KILL KOREA PEOPLE!"

I just smirked and replied, "US Beef delicious. Why no Gyopo or anyone else die in America for eating US Beef?" OK, the kid who yelled out first was not one the best English speakers, but several others who are good speakers took over for him. The class was unanimously in a fever pitch by now, as one of the kids who studies in America for most of his life translated what I said. Next thing I know they are saying stuff like Lee Myun Bak crazy. Sell Dokdo to Japan, and on and on. I say "Korea TV crazy" which more or less brought the house down. My co-teacher who teaches in the other room comes in to see what the commotion was about. I explain, while kids are on top of their chairs chanting "DOKDO! DOKDO! US CRAZY COW! AMERICA CRAZY"--all from 5th graders.

Just had the last class, and get a call from the Manager who says they have gotten 20 phone calls from angry parents in the last hour, and that if they pull their kids out, they would have no choice but to fire me.

KOREA SPARKLING!

You really should NOT care what a bunch of uneducated, ultranationalist kids think.

Your choice to talk back was not the best move.

At least you can find a good school while you are here and not have to deal with crap like that. IT is much easier to do in country that it is from abroad.

Just tell them that nothing is more delicious than Canadian beef. Unless one of them has lived in Canada it's kind of hard to argue with that.

Sounds like your public school is dominated by ultra-nationalist, Kim-Jong-Il worshipping, anti American, anti-Japanese, vitriolic Korean Teacher's Union (KTU) members. It'd be best to prove that some Korean media outlets are full of crap and if the KTU principal fires you for this, aske him to give you the reason in writing (the reason being that you don't support Korean cultural sensibilities by hating on (your own?) American culture. Then send a copy to CNN, BBC, and the NY Times with your story.

Or Nigerian beef. Laughing "Dokdo! Dokdo!" WTF? I didn't notice any cattle grazing in the Dokdo photos.

I double-checked the original post. As written, it's a hagweon, not a public school.

The hagwons must not be having a hard time finding teachers if they're getting rid of teachers over beef and for not going to the beach.

Yeah, not like America, where school children are reasoning little dynamos of logical consistency. Once I told a five year old that I didn't fill out a chain letter and my goldfish died. He yelled at me "post hoc, ergo propter hoc!"

I had a feeling something like that was going to happen and it
was only a matter a time. And the sad thing is it's going to get
worse. For the next month at least as tempers will rise along
with the rising temperatures of an approaching summer, I advise
avoiding ANY topic that has any relationship to beef, the pres.,
Dokdo or even the U.S. If it springs up, change the topic, "So how
about 'dem Dongbu Promy? Great team, huh?"

I can't help but still be amazed at all this hype and hysteria over
something that is even the most remote of hazards to a persons
health yet those same 5th graders are hopping
an holler'n from the tops of the desks, "Bad U.S. cows!" then watch
as one'll suddenly topple over dead from a more realistic and deadly
virus: Bird flu....

I can only shake my head and drink a beer and be thankful that
my gf and students aren't caught up in this nonsense.....yet......

Koreans are raging about it and i don't blame them. Sending over 30 month old beef, some of which is rumored not to be fit for eating is a joke. Its similar to what NZ do to Tonga, which has had a terrible effect on their health (and id argue our meat is way better than American beef)

All that to please the U.S, the new president is an idiot, how can it be good for the Korean people.....(indeed it was to secure Korean exports, cars etc, to the U.S, but im sure he could've got a better deal)

I just heard that McDonald's burger is now on Korean media chopping block. Apparently Koreans found some metalic particle in their beef patties.

Where's McDonald's beef being imported from in Korea?

That's right! "YET". It already came to a head with my gf who works in the media. Big mistake on my part for trying to defend the beef situation. Laughing
