I am considering teaching in South Korea for a year. I would like to work in Seoul. Which areas would be the best to work in? I assume that I would live somewhere near the school. I tend to be a social person so somewhere that has social scene would be nice. I used to live in downtown Seattle and l loved being close to or a short bus/taxi ride away from anything and everything that was going on. I have been looking up all I can about Seoul and reading travel books, but some first hand knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I realize that my previous post makes me sound a bit dim, however, I was looking for an area that had a bit of life. I would prefer not to be in a suburb-y sort of area. I could be basing this choice off of a far too western prejudice though. Never been to asia, so I have no clue and travel books will only get you so far. Finding Jonggak Station was difficult. Right next to city hall?
If you are taking the mick with your suggestion, that's fine. I understand that it is a silly post compared to the more interesting fare on this board.

When looking for neighborhoods to live in I studied satellite images a lot. Try Wikimapia. You can tell what's around, the geography, etc. Then If you see something that looks cool research it further. You just gotta spend a lot of time googling and reading. Get a mental picture of the city.

Using this method, I got into what looks like a very, very, very ideal location for me and I can see where i'll be right down to the exact block Now I just gotta pray that the job is good and i'll be groovy.

The Shinchon area could be what you're looking for. It is kind of in the center of 4 universities. I've lived here for a few years and I don't think I'll ever consider moving anywhere else.

jongno (where jongaak station is located), gangnam, itaewon, shinchon-hongdae, ehwa uni, jamsil and dongdaemun are some of the more lively areas in seoul. it's a big city with good transport and as long as you are in central seoul, you should be fine.

Great advice! I have been looking at different areas using google earth and wikimapia. They both are helping me get a lay of the land so to speak. I had google earth on the pc. Shame on me for not thinking of using it on my own.
