I have heard of this being used, although it wasn't a teacher.
For her, it was an unpaid day of leave. |

| I've never heard of a teacher actually being able to use this. If anything this 'law' suggests that women are not as dependable or capable workers as men. Whether that is or isn't true, it seems to send a bad message. |

OP, I wouldn't try to use it; your co-workers will never respect you again. If it's that bad, use a regular sick day. |

And there's the classic feminist dilemma: do you want to admit that you're disatvantaged and try to use it to your benefit, or pretend that you're not? It's interesting that, for the sake of the latter, a law like this could never pass in the feminist west, but could in an ultra-sexist country finally showing a wee bit of compassion towards the 'weaker' sex, at least in lip service. |

Sure it sucks, but I'd trade places with you if it got me out of 2 years army service and a day off of work every month.
Can I take a day off if I have blue balls?

Okay. Please be advised that it also comes with a 20% average lifetime pay cut in both the US and South Korea. Also, people will assume you're PMSing when you're really just a disagreeable person.
I think a day off for blue balls is fair, if you're willing to call your employer and explain why you need it.
Edit: Yu_Bum_suk, your point is thoughtful and well considered. It kind of reflects the division between second and third wave feminists in the West; e.g., should women seek or reject treatment that differentiates them from men? |

I have students at Yonsei University trying to get away with missing class by giving me "Official Menstruation" excuses. The university leaves it up to instructors whether we accept them or not. I'm a female and I NEVER accept them. If I have to go to work, they have to come to class! (I've never asked for a day off a month, but I'm positive Yonsei would not allow it.) Whatever happened to women wanting equal rights? |

nah, i wouldn't have the balls to use that excuse. besides i use enough tylenol that i would never need to! i was skimming the korean labour law yesterday and i was just curious if any western women used that excuse (for one reason or another) and it was accepted |

i've been tempted to use it a few times since i've come to japan.
what's stopping me is that i don't know how it will be recorded on the time sheet.
there's a stamp for a regular day off, but for a period?
(an angry face, perhaps?)
so far, i just call in sick (and by "sick" i mean i take a regular day off and not a sick day). |
