Ive been offered an afterschool position that seems too good to be true. am i missing something or should i go for it?
i am aware of potential pitfalls of afterschool programs - eg bank account scam, if students don't attend then i dont get paid etc...but given the benefits on offer (waiting to hear back on salary amount), is it worth the risk? This is my / would be my first year in Korea teaching - is this afterschool program a good starting job?

"to good to be true"
Why exactly?
If you are a complete newbie, then you might not be aware that accomodation, airfare, 50%medical and severence are standard in almost all teaching jobs. (No mention of pension here, which is a red flag already...)
Only perk I can see is the actual working hours, 7 hours vs. a regular PS teacher's 8... Then again you are teaching 25 hours/week vs 22...
Seems like a pretty standard offer, definitly not "too good to be true".... |

There is nothing special about that offer
and you get less vacation time than a regular PS teacher would get (you get 2 calendar weeks vs. 14-21 WORKING days = 3-4 calendar weeks) + 2 additional weeks on renewal for a PS teacher.
Also as a subcontractor you may not get the (lawfully required) medical and pension.....
AND working for a contractor you do not have the assurance from the POE that you won't get dicked around on your salary, deductions or other benefits.
Unless the salary is absolutely spectacular.... |
