The most common misconception I get from other Canadians is that Korea is a country full of drug trafficking and crack addiction on every corner...but little use of alcohol.

It's always fun setting people straight on that one.

My parents came to visit last year, after I'd been here 10 months. We were at some palace and my mom kept asking me to read the Hanja that we saw.

"I can't read that, Mom, it's not Korean."

"How can you tell?"

Korean: Are you from Canada?
Me: No. I'm from Philadelphia.

^ How is that any different from you asking someone:

Are you from Korea?
No, I'm from Hunan.
Where in Korea is that?

I can just imagine the same from you, unless you knew Hunan was in China.

Could be worse, at least they didn't say, " Oh, like the cream chees-uh?"

At my first job in Korea in 2000 a mum asked me where I was from.

I had to keep repeating New Zealand. I have always refused to butcher it and say nuu jiland.

Comprehension finally seemed to dawn. Then she said "Ahh Virginia!!" Shocked

Except that you answered the question with "No'

It's not butchering it. It is Korean pronunciation. Just like in English we "butcher" a lot of country names. Do you also refuse to pronounce those the English way?

The funny thing is when they ask 'North Korea or South Korea?' as if that is an intelligent question.

Yeah, that's just it.

Congrats, you know there is a North and a South.

Ah well, everybody is dumb about many things.

I occasionally get snarky comments from people back home based on Koreans' supposed predilection for eating cat. They think they're being witty.

You do have a point. Maybe I should expect Koreans to pronounce their place names in a strange way so I can understand too.

Although Konglish is annoying, he has a point. By your rationale, all English speakers who pronounce it "Pare-is" instead of "Pare-ee" or "Rome" instead of "Roma" should be taken out back and shot.

You know, now that you mention it Koreans are much better than us Anglos at pronouncing names the way they're supposed to be in their original languages: "Par-ee", "Plah-tone", "Atena" etc. So how come it's only English that they make such a dog's breakfast of?!!

^Wait. I take it back. They mispronounce all Chinese characters. According to Scotticus they should cease calling Beijing 'Bugyong' right away.

"But that's how they've been pronouncing them for hundreds of years!" I hear you cry. "Those pronunciations were established back before the modern Chinese pronunciations were fixed, when there were various ways depending on the region. Why is the Korean way any less valid than any other?". Good point! Well, guess what: you know those 'incorrect' ways the English pronounce European city names...?
