What kind of zombies are we dealing with?
If it is Romero zombies then that would be awesome!
If it is the new fangled "28 days Later" or "Dawn of the Dead" remake zombies then that would be crap.
Fast zombies? Who honestly thought that was a good idea?
The whole point is the slow, inevitable march of the undead hunting you down. You cannot run, you cannot hide, death will catch you in the end. It is existensial dread not visceral terror that is the horror of the zombie apocolypse.
Did anyone see I am Legend? CGI Zombies? What the hell! Fast moving CGI zombies! In the book they were vampires!
Jesus Christ Hollywood!

If there was an outbreak in Korea? I am straight down to the nearest US army base! |

You apparently haven't seen the new Day of the Dead. Fast moving, wall-crawling, horny and vegan(!!) zombies. You think you're disappointed in Hollywood now? |

They've made a Day of the Dead remake! Sh*tting hell!
Why don't our scientists do something useful and invent a zombie plague?
It would help clear out the surplus population |

| Of course no one on here is going to survive a zombie outbreak. 85% of the infection will take place before anyone even has a clue as to what is happening. The ensuing panic ensures another 8-12% kill ratio, leaving only those who wish they were dead. |

It would depend on the source I suppose. The type of infection. If the change is rapid, and dependent on living tissue to begin the shift to zombie, it could easily be contained.
If its the dead rising from the ground, then, yeah, it would be an apocalypse.
I prefer the notion of an infection that animates the newly slaughter and infected. In that scenario, if the transition to death was rapid, say less than 8 hours, the spread would be limited depeding on the origin. It would be unlikely to jump continents in planes because most long flights would have an outbreak onboard, likely crashing the plane. The only other likely source would be via shipping, and that could be easily countered. We wouldn't lose the world, just large parts of it. |

Your dog's breakfast is going to be zombie food if you think that test means you'll survive.
I nominate you first eaten.

Additionally, working a job that requires you to sleep lightly is also helpful. I used to do night shifts at for MH/DD clients. Footsteps make me jump awake six years later.
I've never been a parent, but I would think that would also help with the establishment of a heightened sleep awareness. |

Would zombie juice get passed around by mosquitoes? Like, for example, if a zombie got bit by a blackfly or a mogie, and said bloodsucker then bit me, would I be done?
Or for that matter--what about the bacteria and detrivores who feast on the living dead? Would a really bad-ass zombie plague not also include zombie rats, roaches, poopflies, and et cetera?
These are the questions that keep me up at night. |

If bugs and animals can be infected then that's the end of the world. We would never contain it, we would never survive. All life other than plant would be gone. We've seen zombie dogs, it would be interesting to see zombie sea life. Zombie dolphins would be scary.
It really depends on the source. It seems most likely, and most realistic, that the infection would be manufactured. In that case it could be Resident Evil style, but most likely, if manufactured as a weapon, would target only humans. Sort of the biological equivalent to the neutron bomb. |

The last question still bugs me.
The question went like this "You have lived for many years at your compound without a single sighting of the undead. Now, a horde of them has appeared over the horizon. You have adequate food supplies and weapons. What do you do?
The choices were
a) stand and fight it out
b) escape the compound and head for safety.
I chose A because if it came down to that, a world completely infested with the dead, after years of quiet, then screw it; I've spent X amount of years building this base and I'm not abandoning it without a fight!
Yes, this might be my Alamo, but damnit some things are worth fighting for!
Plus it would be tempting to see if they can get thru my "36 levels of death" defense! |

How strong are the zombies physically?
If I hit a zombies skull with a cricket bat will it collapse like rotten fruit? Or will it simply grunt and contiue to come at me?
Romero Zombies are incredibly strong, wearing body armour could protect you from bites but they could still tear you apart with their bare hands.
Will the Zombie plague somehow augment their strength and resilience? |

Weren't zombies originally a Voodoo thing? I always thought they were a 'make a zombie & get it to do all the housework' type thing. They'll never get bored with doing the washing, ironing, folding etc. I reckon I could out-shuffle those things.
That's always been my image of a zombie. Those creatures out of I Am Legend & Resident Evil are more like some whacked out vampire/cannibal/soul-sucker type species on speed. I'd be a goner. |

Voodoo zombies are alive.
These are the walking dead type zombie. The etymology of the word could go either way. Who knows what went on in Africa centuries ago to give rise to the legend.
And what Romero movies are you siting for proof that his zombies are strong? A zombie would start as strong as the person it was. It would then gradually decay and its body would lose effectiveness as a result.
As far as a blow to the head, the human skull is designed to protect the brain. It takes a serious blow to noggin to ace a zombie. Go for the neck. A snapping head on the ground is dangerous, but only if you're not watching where you're going.
As for augmented strength, that's were the Resident Evil story goes. And I suppose the Rage virus from 28 days gives increased strength if only due to elevated adrenalin levels, though they're still alive, so not technically zombies, at least in my mind.
Agentx, I'm with you. If you've made a stand for years, then suddenly they're everywhere again, it could mean two things.
1. The world is gone and the zombies just roam around looking for survivors in which case nowhere is safe if it can be accessed by the dead. Look for an island with sheer cliffs as the only sea access. How you get there, then get up the walls, who knows?
2. The other option is that you jumped ship early, and while you've been living in the wilderness the world fought back the dead. Then several years later another outbreak made more zombos, and that's what you're seeing now.
Either way, the world might be doomed. If you can, fight it out. Might as well go down swinging. |

In Dawn of The Dead and Day of the Dead the zombies start pulling peoples limbs off and ripping out their guts with just their bare hands so I thought they had some kind of augmented strength. Not Resident Evil style superhuman strength but I though they were stronger than normal humans.
What would be the most effective aproach for close quarters combat?
If you were bitten would instant removal of the affected limb prevent you from becoming undead or would the infection spread too quickly? |

I'm not sure limb removal would always be effective, but assuming the limb is removed before the virus can spread beyond the boundary of the cut I don't see why it wouldn't protect you from turning.
Are these the Romero originals or the remakes. To be honest I haven't watched either in some time. It seems reasonable that a number of zombies would be able to tear a person apart, but could the random one on one battle result in arm removal? I doubt it, in fact depending on the state of decay it seems more likely that you could pull a zombies arms off struggling to escape it's grasp.
As for close combat, whatever you can use. If an outbreak happened outside my house right now I would grap a crowbar and my big butcher's blade. If that monster can slice right through beef shoulder I'm sure it would make quick work of zombie skull, and it even has a guard. |
