Hi all. I'm trying to get some torrent questions answered. I use either Utorrent or Bittorrent to download torrents and I'm having some problems. When I first start downloading, the torrents come in at rip-roaring speeds but after a few minutes they slow way down. Not only do the torrents slow way down, but so does the whole computer. I've read all the forums and on-line info out there and I know I have to "forward my ports" and "configure my firewall"
With the port forwarding issue, I can't really figure out how to do this. I think I have to configure my router, but I can't find any info on the web about it since my router is a Korean model: MNG 2800 from what I can tell. Also, both Bittorent and Utorrent ask what number I want to forward on my port and I have no idea. I know I'm a helpless nube, but any help in plain English is appreciated.
Also, I think I need to configure my firewall. I use Zone Alarm for all my security needs.
If anybody has some advice they think would help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. |

I can't answer all your qs, but I can safely say you can take out Zone Alarm; for whatever reason, it clashes with the isps here in K.
that was one of the first things to go when I came here. probably the isp has their own version or other firewall.
anyway, uninstall that and see if helps. |

Thanks moosehead. I'm just concerned about having no firewall. Vista has their own firewall, but my experience with vista has not left me confident in micorsoft services. Is there another firewall/ anti-virus you recommend.? |

IF you have a router you really don't need a software firewall.
A good anti virus is a must.... but the router, if properly set up, will do a better job than any software product to hide your computer. Just make sure all the ports are closed except the ones you commonly need/use. Then the world may be able to see your router but not your computer.
Your internal network routing is not or at least should not be visible to the outside world. The outside world sees your router (eg: ip 211.123.234.6) but your LAN IP (192.1.1.1) should only be able to be seen INSIDE your LAN.
That is why you can install multiple devices / computers behind the router and only pay for one IP address. The outside world doesn't know they exist. They can only see the router. The router takes incoming data and sends it to the appropriate device because it (and only it) is aware of the request for said data.
That is why you have to OPEN a port (or multiple ports) on the router to allow your torrent program to access the outside world and respond to requests at the open port.
