I'm dying, just about, to eat some mince or steak pies - the taste of home. I heard once that there was a 'Bondi Pie' shop around. Anyone know of that or any other place where I could perhaps order some pies for delivery or if not walk in and buy them?
Craving like crazy.

The aussie shop in itaewon does good pies. Although he was out of meat (mince) pies last time i went, pretty disapointing as thats specifically why i went there. |

Just curious, how is an Aussie meat pie different from a regular meat pie? Is it made with koala meat? |

I said I would reply about the pies that were delivered.
I ordered a few steak mince's from Gavin's at the link Noddy gave.
I ate half of one and my kids nibbled at their quarters.
Let's be clear that I come from NZ, and the pies are extraodinary there. But, as this is gourmet food I will state what I think and have a bit of a compare.
The constituency was good and flaky. The flaky texture was there - down pat. That was the best point with the pie itself.
The meat was sort of sparse. I thought it could have had a few chunks of steak in it but it was a lot of onions with a bit of mince, maybe 60-80 grams of it. There was very little gravy, if any. In my mind, meat pies should have a fair bit of runny gravy. But, the meat was a good taste. Very good in fact, but just a little dry without the gravy. A bit more, or at least some, gravy will have perfected these pies.
The butter in the pastry may have been Korean, may have been British.
It had that very slight after-taste that Korean butter has. A taste that I'm not sure originates from dairy itself if you know what I mean ...
Kiwis may know what I mean when you compare the taste of bottled tomato juice between NZ and here ...
In NZ we can buy six equivalent pies for the price of one of these - One of these (Gavin's pies) being 5500 won. Not really bad. One of these for a bag of instant mandu. (I'd rather have four of these than a pseudo steak from TGIF.)
There was excellent packaging and delivery, on-ice. Packaging was great but I hope the meat quantity wasn't sacrificed for making such perfect packaging.
Am I glad I bought them. Yes. I can spend 70k on a bottle of scotch. So yeah. For the similar taste of home-cooked, for sure. But, I felt it disappeared down the gullet real quick - perhaps it was too flaky. A whole pie likely won't satiate hunger. But, I'm a guts anyway and can eat a whole family size in one go.
I got half-way home in an ethereal sense of taste. To Brits the taste may be the 'full Monty,' but to me it wasn't quite 'tu meke.'
However, I'm still happy. Happier now that I have them sitting amongst all the kimchi that's in the frig. Hope my son doesn't keep wanting to eat them ...
Perhaps they make them with more filling if you order via the Foreigners Checkout. I ordered direct thru wife's name so maybe they make their servings less for Korean orders. Molla. |

I suspect if you had pies in Britain and found them dry and lacking in filling, you bought them at supermarkets / corner shops. Yeah, they're shite and get dryer and have less meat by the year. It's enraging to open up a pie you just paid one pound thirty for and find a dry case with 5 mm of filling in it...
Chips shops still do the proper thing in someplaces though, but yeah the pie in the UK has became a sad facsimille of what it used to be and no longer deserves the name. Actually most of the food in supermarkets is shite there now lol.... |
