I went hiking yesterday with the school and teachers. It was fun, I would suggest going on these excursions. I also got fed a lot of food by students so that was a bonus =) |

I don't get why anyone would whine about going on a hiking trip. I went on a hiking trip the other day which revealed me to be fitter than the Korean teachers, and that seems to be thought of as a good thing. Hence even if I suck at teaching English I can still serve as reinforcement for some of the few positive stereotypes Koreans have of Western males, which seems to be a big part of why they want us here. Besides, walking up a mountain is infinately preferable to the sheer unmitigated horror of teaching.
I think a lot of people on this forum are punk kids who have never had to scramble for a dollar and aren't attuned to the unsavory reality of what most people have to do for money. Back where I come from (New Zealand), a job where they paid you to go hiking or sit at your desk doing nothing would seem like some kind of utopian fantasy and certainly nothing to complain about. |

I despise hiking. I love walking with my MP3 player but I have crappy hay fever and being up in the mountains with all the fresh vegetation has my eyes watering and sneezing and being miserable.
I get plenty of Korean Culture. I have been here going on 7 years. And married to a Korean and have a Korean MIL. I am up to my butt in Korean culture and what have you.
I have been to a couple of membership training things. (teacher) and made complete ass of myself at sports day but I don't like to hike. Me and another teacher (Korean). We don't hike! So we stay at school. I get a lot of stuff done. Copies ordered, worksheets done. Clean out the cupboards in my classroom. Give my classroom a real cleaning. Stuff like that.
Hiking up a mountain is NOT fun for me. Hiking for me is a something I will do now and again for clearing my mind and I do it alone.
I attend enough of the school functions to make everyone happy but won't do the run up the mountain, drink soju, eat a bunch of meat and then run back down. Nope I stay and hold down the fort and me and a few other Korean teachers order up lunch and have long lunch and chat and they correct my Korean and it is all just fine.
SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE HIKING! REALLY IT IS TRUE.

Im currently working for a public school thru GEPIK. Today I was informed that I must go on a one day hiking trip. I dont want to go and I will protest it. Has anyone tried to portest such an event ,and what was the outcome. If you got away with not going , did you get the day off. I looked at the contract and couldnt see anything that would indicate that I had an obligation to attend the hiking trip. |
You sound like a whining goat packer. Get off your ass and be a team player. |
