Does anyone know of a good stock broker in Seoul who would be willing to help me invest some money that I have earned. I don't know what I am really looking for I guess. It's my first time investing.

I want to invest some money into the long term and some money into higher risk/profit investments. I guess I will admit I don't really know what I am doing. I am looking to start out with around 10,000 dollars to invest.

Anyone know of any high yielding stocks or good investments at this time? Any that you can recommend to a fellow teacher? That or a good stock broker who won't swindle me.

you can use etrade korea(etrade.co.kr) to trade in the korean stock exchange on your own. the commissions are very low...very very low, but you have to know where you want to invest your money.

i know of a korean stock broker that works for ING and another major korean stock trading company if you are interested. he speaks good english and seems genuine. i am planning on setting up some mutual funds and health insurance through him. my buddy has already set up some mutual funds through him and he has been satisfied so far. hopefully he'll be able to get me in to the american stock markets with korean capital gains taxes (under 5%). pm or email me if you want his contact info.

Stockbrokers work on commision. So how much commission is a Stockbroker going to make on a client with a lousy $10,000? Probably about $40.
Hey Kim, get off the phone with your million dollar client, and help out this schmuck with a lousy $10,000. Yep he'll be jumping at the opportunity.

Dude you've got no idea what your doing, you might as well use the $10,000 to buy a Korean lifetime gym membership.

smurfystew, I would try to do some research on your own at first. Since you're relatively new to investing, I would stick with things like index funds. You can buy an index fund for the Korean stock market. Emerging market funds like BRICs (Brazil, Russia, China, India) funds are popular. You can go to any place like Woori or Hana Investment & Securities and they'll have people help you out. I teach classes at Woori and am an experienced investor. I try to pick their brains for investment tips but nothing they come up with are ever of any surprise to me.

The best advice I can give you is to diversify. Also, if you have a long time frame, your chances at success are much greater.

Thanks for that enlightening post. Exactly what we need more of on Dave's.

Yea it is an enlightening post isn't it! With only $10,000 a person is better off using an online broker. Do you really think your going to get good advise from a full service broker. Brokers work on commission, they are salespeople after all.
Years ago when I worked in funds management we would get broker research.
The broker research for the private client consisted of 2 pages covering 8 or so companies, about 2 paragraphs per company.
As an institution, we would receive broker research that was about 50 pages per company.
Small fish clients typically get passed onto the newbie no nothing broker, who is struggling and desperate for commission.
A fool and his money are easily parted.

While your point is noteworthy and not incorrect, the manner in which you deliver it lacks tact and empathy.

OP, I'm somewhat in the same boat in that I don't know much, but I know I should be doing something. In the last year, I've invested conservatively, putting some money in term-deposits yielding around 5.5-6%, as well as some GIC's and Mutual Funds. The best way to find someone to help you is through word of mouth (like, perhaps, here on Dave's), through someone you know who is investing moderately.

If you put your 10,000$ into a one-year term deposit, you should come out of it after a year with about 550-600$ in interest. Not great, but not nothing...
