DO NOT get a cheaper Nikon. Mid to upper range Nikons are great. Cheap ones are not. I should have learned this lesson 5 years ago when I bought my dad his low-end Nikon. I didn't. We bought my mother-in-law a brand new Nikon last week, and the photos just SUCK. Online Amazon reviews are obviously skewed to positive results by Nikon hiring people to say positive things. you pick through every 10 reviews of that camera to find one where somebody says pretty much all I feel about the camera. Some of them also ask how the heck anyone could like the camera at all.

My wife says that her company also employs PT people to skew reviews... I wholly believe Nikon does this, as I don't possibly see how anyone could like the $120 camera we bought. My 4 year old 3 megapixel camera takes far better photos.

If you go low-end, go with Kodak or Canon. Their low-end stuff is still good.

I'd go for a Canon hands down. Well made, easy to use and you can take decent photos too! I think Canons only use lithium batteries though - which could be a problem if you break/lose/forget etc it, as they can be expensive to replace!

for compact get a canon. theres the cheap and cheerful a570is which can take an aa battery so its good if you are out and about and it runs out of juice. will take nice photos but the camera itself aint too pretty.

I bought a spare lithium battery for my Canon camera in Seoul last year (from one of the many camera stores near Namdaemun) and I remember it being pretty cheap - around 12 000won I think.
