Hello..I had a cold shower my first day here, but then I worked out how to heat up the water! I tried to do so today, but it will not work!!! How do I make it work? When I press the Red Button to turn it on (like always) I get a flashing red light (as pictured) and then if I try to turn the water on (the green button below the red)....NOTHING happens!!! Can someone tell me what is happening, and what I can do to fix this? Thanks.
Oh dear....the FAQ is down, and I can't remember how to post a picture!!!!! |

It has to be primed.
Under the boiler (not the control box, the actual boiler) there's likely a little brass spigot. Turn that and you'll hear water flowing. Let it flow into the boiler until water starts spurting out of the overflow hose (stand to the side of the boiler so you don't get wet) and turn off the spigot. Go back to the thermostat box and turn the heater back on and you should be good to go. |

Hmmmm....where is the boiler? I have two control boxes in my laundry, but nothing else...no boiler looking thing....and no brass spigot!!!!! |

The boiler is probably hanging on a wall in some innocuous place such as the kimchi balcony or outside in the entranceway. It looks like a large white emergency kit hanging on the wall with a flexible chimney pipe leading out from the top and and a few pipes wrapped in (probably) yellow insulating material leading in. If you still can't find it, follow the gas line leading into your range -- generally in the crap holes that schools put us into they put the boiler near where the gas comes into the house. |

Thanks mate....I found it....I turned the spigot....no noise....no water....do I have to leave it open for a while? I appreciate the help by the way....especially because tomorrow is my first day of actual teaching...and a cold shower is not how I want to start things!!! |

Hmmm. It should be immediate...
Check upstream on the pipe running into the boiler and see if there's a quarter-turn valve somewhere that is off. |

If you haven't gotten things worked out, try this...
a) put on your most pitiful face and knock on the neighbor's door
b) keeping your palm down, motion to follow you...
c) lead your puzzled neighbor to the boiler and shrug your shoulders.
d) after they fix things for you, run down to the nearest convenience shop and buy some fruit and deliver to the neighbors. |

There wouldn't happen to be a notice written in Korean taped on your door, would there?
I had a similar problem and... yeah they turned my gas off for a huge unpaid bill during my first week in the place. |

I omitted Step 2:
Copy down everything (EVERYTHING) on the thermostat and take it to work with you tomorrow and ask someone to translate it for you. The best way is to draw a diagram of the thing and copy, letter-for-letter, the words.
But in the meantime, try the neighbors. Playing the Stupid Foreigner Card is known to have worked thousands of times. It's also useful when you want to do something you know you aren't supposed to...like riding a cycle with no helmet.
