Never been to Thailand.

Gonna bring the wife and 2 little kids.

Where's a nice relaxing place to go *without* having to rub shoulders with the Sex Tourists...

Nong Kai is nice.

If you are brave enough you can get a hire car at Udon airport and drive around that way. Along to the Maekhong.

There used to be a swingers hotel up that way but it eventually got closed down.

I recommend always recommend http://www.munnorkislandresort.com/360/index-eng.html

But people think it's too pricey

I'm thinking of some time in Thailand with my kids so good timing.

I looked at the website for munnork island resort; it is too pricey for me. However the following parts jumped out at me:

Payment :
Full payment required prior to your arrival and all rates are quoted in Thai Baht and only payable in cash
A Deposit of 50% of the total. Amount have to be paid within 3 days after the confirmation and the remaining balance of 50% will be paid minimum 10 days prior the arrival date.
Cancellation :
We do not accept cancellation or postpone less than 10 working days prior to actual arrival date. No refund at any case.

So, how do you manage to book it from here when full payment is to be made 10 days before you arrive and in cash?!
And no refunds under any circumstance?!

tough policies.

Nice pictures but yeah, that's kind of pricey.
Squirrel, I lived in Klaeng for a couple of years and spent many great weekends at Lam Mae Pim, but I never heard of Mun Nork Island. How long has the resort been there? I recall that one of those islands had a sea turtle preserve.

Not sure how long, we went about 2 or 3 years ago. Bit hazzy on that.

It was nice. Not the best value for money but there were only a couple of other guests there so it was peaceful.

A couple of days there for 300,000 or so isn't a lot if you really want no crowds.

Used to ride down Klaeng for bike parties. Always good fun.

If the OP is ok with driving there he could always venture up to Kao Yai national park for a couple of days and around that way in the Khorat Plateau and the valley on the other side (name forgotten for now) nice place, cooler this time of year and some interesting vineyards around that way.

Can't remember the name of it just now but heading up the 304 from Chacheongsao towards Khorat, up through the mountains, and the top there is a famous place for organic farms and a get away for Bangkokians.

Some good threads on places to visit here
