| You are right. The high reps every once in a while is a good way to shock the muscles into a new phase of growth. I don't like counting anymore. It seems to make the workouts to boring and restrictive. Try doing this when you are in a high rep workout : put your headphones onto a good song and say to yourself that you are going to continue doing the exercise until the song finishes. It's a good way to get a really intense burn in the muscle and your mind can concentrate on the form instead of on the counting. |

For those of you who don't like the gym, try cycling outside in the summer. The Han river has tons of bikes and its fun to do with friends. I spent hours doing that before I left the country. Couldn't walk the next day
If you're going for building muscle, then I don't know about doing alot of cardio.... |

If you want to "look" good and not just have flabby big muscles, add some rowing to your regiment. It rocks and you'll have an gluts galore and everything, I mean everything toned....hits all the little muscles.
Best fitness investment I ever made, an indoor erg. and I know a lot about treadmills too....

Used to go to the gym and do a solid 3 day push / pull / legs routine along with all the controlled eating etc and ended up feeling like a bored, burned out control freak.
Anyone interested in a cool alternative - this is what I do now.
A. Eat whatever I like in moderation and allowing 'feasting' ie eating out with friends and not caring what I eat around once a week.
B. Keep it simple stupid. I now have a FULL BODY anarobic / cardiovascular workout that is comprised of only 5 compound bodywieght exercises.
1. Chin ups - 5 sets of 5, add weight once you can do 5 X 5 bodyweight. I prefer palms facing as it is more of a compound movement and hits more muscles. Hits rear shoulders, lats, upper back and biceps.
2. Fatman pull ups / body wieght rows. At the park, lie under a bar around waist height or at the gym use a smith machine bar. Grab the bar with palms facing away and stretch out your legs, pull in your abs and do 2 sets 10 - 15 reps wide grip and 2 sets same reps with narrower grip. Hits lats, traps, rear delts and all upper back muscles.
3. Parallel bar dips. 5 x5 as with chins, add weight once can do 5 x 5 bodyweight (*not for the feinthearted!) Hits chest, tris and front / side delts.
4. Incline crunches. Keep gut pulled in tight and do 3 sets to failliure. Pulling gut in exercises transverse abs (which lie under the abs) and it is lack of using these that makes our guts stick out when we're not even fat! Add twists to make it more compound if you like. Hits entire ab region.
5. Step sprints. The park where I do all of this has 25 steps leading to it. sprint up and down 1 step at a time 10 times, then 2 at a time 10 times and then 1 at a time 5 times and then 2 at a time 5 times. Hits both slow/fast twich muscles in calves, quads, hams and glutes as well as being an AWESOME cardio workout.
Do it every 3rd day, so 1 day on, two off.
You'll be in decent shape within a month or two with this all over workout, and you can do it at zero expense in the great outdoors in most big parks and at the top of aroun 30% of the mountinas in Korea where they have those outdoors gyms.
You wont be a FLEX mag type but you'll be defined, solid and in great general all round shape. |

Really? Legs and back don't need any work then....? Only abs, chest and front / side delts.... Say hello to posture // muscularscelatal inbalances when you're older.....
Reminds me of when me and my mates would work out in my garden in the summer before going to the beach when we were 18... All we did was bench press, ez bar curls and overhead presses... looked pumped from the front but had chicken legs and looked rake-like from the back... Ha ha, we didn't care though as we never saw those parts in the mirror whilst we posed to our hip-hop music in our bedrooms....  |
