I just bought a Korean Nintendo Wii.

It's awesome.

The salesman told me that it's not possible to play US, EU or Japanese games on my wii. Only Korean. Crap.

I've done some google searches, but haven't found anything specific to unlocking the Korean wii to make it region-free.

I'm thinking of taking a trip to Yongsan, wondering around to try and get it modified.

Otherwise I'll just have to master Korean.

Has anyone else tried and succeeded?

Many thanks!

I checked out that disk that you're talking about, Mr. Squirrel, but there isn't a disk for the Korean wii...only Jap, Yank, and Euro.

So....I'm thinking of returning the Korean wii, venturing out to Yongsan and getting a Japanese one. Maybe get it modded as well.

You would be lookinag at about 280,000 for a modded Japanese version (that is what they were quoting when the Korean wii came out).

There might be a modd available in the future, but ya never know. But in my opinion a Japanese, European, or N.A wii would be better.

Doesnt work with the Korean wii. Those have been available for a while. The Korean wii is unique in its design compared to ALL other wii's at the present.

Update:

I tried to return my Korean wii, but I couldn't because the box was opened (duh).

So...my only options are to sell it for a reduced price or wait until (maybe) a mod chip comes out for Korean wiis.

Young Frankenstein: Your game guy is pretty confident that he can modify Korean wii's soon?

Man, I hope the chip-masters in Yongsan get this one figured out. Otherwise I'm stuck with a Korean Wii with 3 games that I can't understand...Embarassed

And for the record, even if you get it modded, you will not be able to play certain games.. The most popular titles have updates on them that are needed to be installed before you can play the game..

Ex.. mario galaxy, SSBB, and Mario Kart wii.

Thus if the game has an upgrade on it, it still might not be able to be played if it hasn't been released in Korea. Just a heads up.

There seems to be a few people on here with modded machines, so if a mod chip becomes available, I am sure others can help you get games and such. Good luck.

I did the same thing. Bought a Korean Wii and already made the trip to Yongsan. You won't be able to get it chipped until August at least.

He's never let me down before. But even if this is the first time, it doesn't really effect me. I can play the Korean games without problem. I only want the chip so I can burn my own torrent copies, but I can live without it if I had to.

Word on the street is that nintendo waited so long to release the Wii in Korea in order to prevent it from being easily chipped.

Sounds like the Korean Wii has a lot more anti-piracy measures than the other systems.

Piracy is one of the reasons that the Wii's chance of release in China is slim to none at this point.

Doesn't sound good if you own a Korean Wii.

Only problem is that there is a limited selection on the Korean games. (I think 5 at the moment). Also, alot of the popular titles aren't going to be released in the near future.
